I was a big fan of Bardstown Bourbon Company's Origin Series Wheated Bourbon and much to my surprise, I am able to find that, their Bottled in Bond selection and the standard bourbon in abundance at my local Total Wine. Considering the quality and value for dollar proposition of this lineup, I'm quite pleased that they are so readily available.
The nose on this selection is sweet and rich. Caramel drizzled over sweet peach ice cream really brings to mind dessert. Deeper in the nose you'll find some classic americana - a payday bar with its nutty, roasty peanuts and sweet sticky caramel. This nose makes one think that the taste will be cloying.
The start of the taste is sweet cream and apricot jam but interestingly enough, the mouthfeel isn't thick as one would think from the nose. Also, there is a surprising amount of fruit on the palate. Besides the apricot, some orange marmalade, and overripe cherries add to the fruity bouquet joined with some slightly tannic lemon rind. There's also an underlying bittersweet dark cocoa powder thing going on.
Speaking of bittersweet, that's the theme to the finish. Its a long one; belied by the somewhat thinner mouthfeel. Tannic oak and dark chocolate take center stage with some slightly spicy cracked black pepper and cinnamon. It's not terribly complex but is very balanced and enjoyable.
I think their Wheated selection just barely edges it out for me when compared with this Bottled in Bond but really, both are excellent bourbons and at SRP, screaming value for money. As they're so readily available, you may as well get out there and buy up the core offerings in this line up.
