Broken Barrel Heresy Rye
Rye
Broken Barrel // Kentucky, USA
This whiskey begins with Kentucky straight rye (95% rye, 5% malted barley) distilled by Owensboro Distilling Co. and is aged at least 2 years.
Then rye is dumped and batched into a tank and further aged with selected oak staves. In this case, 40% were ex-bourbon barrel staves, 40% new French oak staves, and 20% sherry oak staves.

RyeUnlike bourbon, rye whiskey can be made anywhere in the world. But if made in the US, the mash bill recipe must be at least 51% rye and it must be aged in new, charred oak barrels with no age requirement. Elsewhere, the rye whiskey will be made keeping the country of origin's rules regarding the recipe and minimum aging.

Tasting Notes
"The nose offers menthol and lingonberries, along with green oak, and creamy flan topped with dulce de leche. The palate showcases cloves, nutmeg and ginger leading a baking spice charge, along with dark chocolate brownies. The finish is bold, with black pepper, leather, cacao nibs, and final notes of spearmint and anise."
