ESP NOHO Gin
Empire Spirits Project // New York, USA
Based in Manhattan, with a distilling location in Yonkers, Empire Spirits Project aims to make gin with unique flavor profiles. NOHO utilizes saffron, cardamom and orange in addition to the requisite juniper.
Modern GinAlso has been referred to as "Contemporary", "New Western", "New Wave", and "New American". This style is not legally defined. In general, this category of gin, while it does contain juniper, places less of an emphasis on this botanical. Other botanicals not classically used in London Dry gins are often utilized and often highlight botanicals grown in the region the gin is produced. Most produced as either London Dry or Distilled Gins.
"It should be noted that there is a saffron color to this gin which the black bottle obscures. There is a nice play with savory and sweet aromas to this gin and the saffron really comes through. The orange and piney juniper are clear as a bell, but the juniper, of course takes a back seat. Clearly, not your standard London Dry; although you could have a martini with this gin (maybe even with a touch of fino sherry instead of vermouth), it would seem to be put to better use in sour or fizz cocktails. Really lovely and one to seek out."
