Dark RumAKA Black Rum. Usually aged (but not always) and has additional caramel-coloring added to provide the dark/black color. Some are distilled from blackstrap molasses. No specific type or size barrel required for aging nor is there a set time required for aging in most countries with a few exceptions.

"The aroma of the rum has a strong upfront pop of charred oak and molasses. As this subsides the more subtle notes of lemongrass, dried coconut and vanilla appear. On the palate the rum delivers dynamic depth of oak tannins, caramel, dried coconut, tobacco leaf, and leather. This all leads to a funky mineral, dried-orange-peel finish."
