Very similar to Elijah Craig 12. A bit less complex but smoother.
Update: After revisiting this much later I didn’t care much for it. I know this is a single barrel but this particular barrel is lackluster. I am a big fan of Heaven Hill products but this just isn’t worth it considering the recent price increase.
Nose: Ethanol burn at first.... lots of burn. Baking spice with hints of brown sugar. Banana. Lite cherry as it sits.
Palate: Rye spice. Dry oaky bite to sides. Lite banana again. Mild oilyness.
Finish: Banana plant stalk almost chalky. Dry.
Closing thoughts: Complex, surprisingly balanced. You think it’s developing into a oaky dry finish then it transitions to be somewhat more textured and oily.
Edit: this is the '18 bottling which won. The '19 is good, but not quite as good. Say 92 vs 88 or so.
absolutely mouthwatering. The palate all has balance and feels purposed. The vanilla and oak predominate but never steal the show. All the best players in a shot-worthy brown get extended solos in this piece. unbelievable value under $40. ENJOY NEAT ROOM TEMP.
