Laphroaig 10 Year Cask Strength (Batch 1)

Great but catches you in the throat. Water brings it to a milder 10 year. Good to start the night or end it

Great flavor. Super finish. Smoke plus se complexity. Preferred the triple wood cask strength cairdeas as it had just a little extra depth, but this is a very close second.

Peated whiskeys for the win.

I'll start by saying I don't typically do whisky reviews, but here we go. The Laphroaig 10 cask strength sits at a positively blistering 60% abv. Even the most diehard of peat heads are going to want to add water to this one to open it up. After letting it sit for 10 minutes and adding a few teaspoons of water, the best way I can describe it is a coastal fire. Sea Air/Iodine, Smoke, Peat, and Wood. The finish in particular seems to leave almost a salty aftertaste, which is not something I've experienced before from a whisky. Overall, this is an excellent representation of Islay style whiskys. It's certainly not going to be for everyone, but for those who like peat and smoke I would encourage you to give it a try. Its very intense, but extremely complex and smokey, and can hold it's own against other greats like the Lagavulin 16.

Batch 11: 58.6% - Remnants of a Bonfire on a beach. Heard this was the 10 turned up to 11. Didn’t disappoint. Sea salt, brine. Smoke ash. Wood. In that order. Laphroaig 10 was the first scotch I really fell for. I still go back and sip it from time to time but I find the low abv leaves something to be desired. This remedies that and then some. UPDATE: Bumping up to 4.5. The fact that I’ve bought 3 more batches of this since the original taste says all you need to know. Particularly given the relative value at $90-100 near me. For quality age statement cask strength this is indeed a bargain, and worth a lot more.

This is one of those classic low-tide smelling drams. It smells like a bog, pure and simple. The peat is strong but the burn is very subtle for the proof. There is a medicinal ointment-like sweetness with an oaky backbone. This is an amped-up version of the classic Laphroaig expression.
