Linkwood 37 Year 1978 (2016 Special Release)
Linkwood // Speyside, Scotland
This limited edition vintage release from Diageo was distilled in 1978 and bottled for the brand's Special Releases of 2016, an annual collection of rare bottlings, many from distilleries abandoned long ago. This Speyside single malt slumbered in oak for at least 37 years before reaching maturity. It is bottled at 50.3% ABV with a limited production run of only 6,114 bottles.
Single MaltDistilled in pot stills from 100% malted barley, produced at one distillery, aged in barrels; if Scotch or Irish, must be aged for at least three years.
"Find a burst of tropical fruits on the nose, with green apple, melons, and Jolly Ranchers. The palate then shifts starkly into dry oak and spice, with ginger and black pepper, and menthol. Overall warming, with waxy characteristics. Surprisingly salty. Finish starts hot and big but mellows with oaky tannins, and more spice and medicinal notes. A classic Speyside boosted by its cask strength, with the twist of that lasting saltiness, which with water morphs into an addictive chocolate/salted caramel riff."
