New Riff Balboa Rye
-
Milliardo
Reviewed November 4, 2024 (edited November 6, 2024)This deserves more time than I’m giving it, so perhaps I can revisit one day. Nose is sugar, salt, honeydew melon. Body is caramel, lemon cookie. Bit of strawberry. Finish is brine, coffee. This is delightful. Hard to love it too much next to other New Riff ryes, but that lemon cookie was a first for me. -

Reviewed May 23, 2024Nose - confectionary sugar, dark oak character, strawberry, blueberry. Not much spice on the nose besides maybe a hint of mint? Palate - spearmint, mild rye spice. There is some kind of earthy undertone that dulls the spice notes. Two other muted notes are orange peel and strawberry. Finsih - medium. The spearmint and a slight lingering maple syrup-like sweetness hang around for a pleasantly long amount of time. Overall, I think this is a phenomenal bottle from New Riff. More importantly, I see this as a gateway bottle to ryes for those that generally dislike rye whiskey. -

Reviewed March 3, 2024Nose: fruity, strawberry watermelon ice, runts candy, rosemary. Taste: sticks with the fruit forward, spice cones in late and lingers. No oak, and very light or thin. Longer finish, very solid overall. Doesnt hold up with ice, maybe a deop or two of water. Nothing wrong with it, missing something (maybe oak or sweetness thats typical with bourbon). Would drink neat and would buy another every time to have a back up bottle. -

Reviewed October 13, 2023 (edited December 10, 2023)The description on this is spot on. Orange citrus combines with a little spice. Fairly thin on the palate and not a real long finish. Decent pour.
