The Original Dark is a blend of Trinidad and Tobago rums selected by Alexandre Gabriel and aged in young American oak bourbon casks. The base rum is aged three to five years and is then blended with a more robust, fully-flavored eight year old rum. This blend is then aged 12 to 18 months in Cognac Ferrand French oak barrels.

AKA Black Rum. Usually aged (but not always) and has additional caramel-coloring added to provide the dark/black color. Some are distilled from blackstrap molasses. No specific type or size barrel required for aging nor is there a set time required for aging in most countries with a few exceptions.

Tasting Notes

"Light smoke on the nose, with banana, orange peel and allspice. The secondary aging in cognac barrels imparts a touch of hogo, or “funk” that’s noticeable on the rich and velvety palate, along with dried fruit, vanilla and clove. The finish lingers with more hints of smoke, candied fruit and holiday spices."
