Plantation Rum Original Dark Overproof
Dark Rum
Plantation // Trinidad & Tobago
At 73 percent ABV, Plantation Original Dark Overproof is simply the heavy-hitter version of the Plantation Original Dark, at 40 percent ABV. Both are sourced from Angostura in Trinidad, and both are a blend of younger rums with a touch of eight year rum to add a slug of hogo. Aging is done in heavily charred ex-bourbon casks, followed by a dunk in Cognac casks in France.
This review covers the original Trinidad-only version. In mid-2015 Plantation announced that subsequent releases will be a blend of Trinidad and Jamaican rums. .

Dark RumAKA Black Rum. Usually aged (but not always) and has additional caramel-coloring added to provide the dark/black color. Some are distilled from blackstrap molasses. No specific type or size barrel required for aging nor is there a set time required for aging in most countries with a few exceptions.

Tasting Notes
"The Original Dark Overproof’s nose is surprisingly light for such a high ABV rum. Sipping it at full strength is obviously a challenge and not the intended way to consume it, but if you do, you’ll find a sweet, berry-like fruitiness beneath the wall of alcohol burn. Diluting down a manageable 90 proof, you’ll uncover roasted notes alongside the traditional Plantation juicy fruit flavor. It’s actually quite sippable, but you’re more likely to use it in powerful cocktails requiring a big dose of rummy flavor."
