Founded in 2017 by Matt Johns, Pōkeno Whisky Co. is located just over 50km southeast of Auckland on the North Island of New Zealand. The subtropical climate here means the angel's share is around 8% per year.
The single malt whisky is made with family-farmed barley from the South Island along with volcanic spring water from the North Island. Origin is fully matured in first-fill bourbon casks. The brand launched in the US in January 2023.

Tasting Notes
"The aroma of the whisky is quite fruity, particularly with coconut and pear notes. There's some toasted wood and light dried herbal notes as well as some fresh beer. The weight of the whisky is medium-light and a touch slick, but there're pleasant notes of toasted cereal and a dollop of honey. It feels tangy and lightly spicy on the palate and again those coconut and pear flavors come back on the taste as well. It's on the young side, but this whisky is enjoyable enough to purchase just out of curiosity's sake. Bring to a gathering with other whisky drinkers. "
