Redwood Empire Cask Strength Emerald Giant (2022 Release)
Rye
Redwood Empire // USA
Redwood Empire Cask Strength Emerald Giant is one of three limited edition bottlings featuring uncut and unfiltered whiskeys of the distillery's core portfolio. Emerald Giant is its blended straight rye offering and here three different grains make up its recipe — 94% rye, 5% malted barley and 1% wheat. The ryes featured here were aged in 53-gallon, char #3 barrels for a minimum of four years and up to 6 years.
Since they were aged in the California fog belt, the cask strength proof of 116.4 is lower than many other such offerings of similar makeup. Cask Strength Emerald Giant is available nationwide as of October 2022.

RyeUnlike bourbon, rye whiskey can be made anywhere in the world. But if made in the US, the mash bill recipe must be at least 51% rye and it must be aged in new, charred oak barrels with no age requirement. Elsewhere, the rye whiskey will be made keeping the country of origin's rules regarding the recipe and minimum aging.

Tasting Notes
"The nose shows a strong rye grain aroma along with dried herbal notes. Moving onto the flavor you'll find a bitter taste with the herbs and dark rye notes coming through once again. With water there's a touch of cherry that comes out, but mostly the flavors are more spice and herb driven. The finish leans into the savory side, but overall the flavors are a bit one note. Would prefer a bit more time in barrel."
