Revivalist Gin Harvest Expression
Revivalist Botanical Gin // Pennsylvania, USA
A gin for all seasons? At Brandywine Branch Distillers in Elverson, Pennsylvania, a more accurate phrase may be a gin for EACH season. Harvest is their fall-time expression and features some malted grain in the base for a richer spirit. Also, traditional autumn spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, elderflower, and clove join more typical gin botanicals juniper, lemon, orange, angelica, and coriander.
Modern GinAlso has been referred to as "Contemporary", "New Western", "New Wave", and "New American". This style is not legally defined. In general, this category of gin, while it does contain juniper, places less of an emphasis on this botanical. Other botanicals not classically used in London Dry gins are often utilized and often highlight botanicals grown in the region the gin is produced. Most produced as either London Dry or Distilled Gins.
"Fall-time spice can often become too cloying or fake-tasting as pumpkin-spice lattes and some Octoberfest beers have shown. Happily, the folks at Brandywine Branch have created a gin with aromatics that suggest autumn flavors without being a cinnamon bomb. Traditional gin botanicals keep the spirit’s identity intact with pleasant flavors of juniper and coriander. The added malted spirit makes for a rich, oily spirit with plenty of mouthfeel and a touch of white-whiskey character. Certainly far from traditional, but this is a gin with plenty of character and seasonal charm."
