Ron Viejo de Caldas Gran Reserve
Aged Rum
Ron Viejo de Caldas // Colombia
The Ron Viejo de Caldas line of rums originates in Colombia and is produced by the state-owned Industria Licorera de Caldas. This particular expression is aged for a minimum of eight years in oak casks at high altitude.
There are conflicting reports of it being either virgin oak casks or ex-bourbon. The packaging is spartan, but the pricing is fair for what it is.

Tasting Notes
"The color is surprisingly dark for an eight year rum. The nose brings to mind vanilla and oak, reminiscent of bourbon. The initial taste includes a bit of peppermint and menthol, which fades quickly. From there the flavors become subtle, with a very dry finish with no indication of added sugar. Although not particularly complex or an everyday sipper by any stretch, it’s a good match for cocktails calling for a light, dry rum in the Nicaraguan or Cuban style. You might be tempted to dismiss it as a bottom shelf rum, but if given a chance, you’ll find it has more than a passing similarity to Cuban rums of the same age."
