Sazerac Rye 18 Year (Fall 2015)
Rye
Sazerac // Kentucky, USA
The 2015 Sazerac Rye 18 Year Old from Buffalo Trace's Antique Collection is the end of a short-lived era. Several years ago, Buffalo Trace loaded this spirit into a stainless steel tank to prevent ongoing aging, and has withdrawn from it annually for its release.
That makes this whiskey, bottled at 90 proof, older than 18 years, although that's the correct mileage in terms of time spent in barrel. Next year is an entirely different batch, so it's a good time to revisit and remember this, and see how it holds up to next year's release.

RyeUnlike bourbon, rye whiskey can be made anywhere in the world. But if made in the US, the mash bill recipe must be at least 51% rye and it must be aged in new, charred oak barrels with no age requirement. Elsewhere, the rye whiskey will be made keeping the country of origin's rules regarding the recipe and minimum aging.

Tasting Notes
"Sweet aromas surprise on the nose, with vanilla coming in first before the rye spice. There are even faint hints of honey and melons in the background. The palate offers rye spice and dry oak, a touch of grain, and an overall dusty, musty profile. A long, warm finish brings with it a tingling to the tongue and cheeks, along with minty and medicinal notes. Toss in an ice cube to both accentuate the woody notes and also bring out a chocolate-like sweetness."
