Water is added to bring the spirit down to as low as 37.5% ABV in the EU and 40% ABV in the US. It is usually filtered, often with charcoal, prior to bottling. It is almost always clear and unaged.

"Getting too close to the glass, you'll get the alcohol burn, but not much else. Some cereal grain aromas. Tasting neat, you'll get a little oil slickness on your palate, but the proof whisks that away quickly. Finish is clean and you are left with a bittersweet flavor on your palate and a chest burn from the proof. Best mixed."
