The folks at Barrell Craft Spirits have responded to the biggest knocks on their Bourbon releases. Firstly that they are pretty expensive at $90 and that they are Dickel heavy (not all batches but it's almost always there). So what they did is create another brand with a focus on younger stock (average age of 5-6yrs) and an MGP base versus the typical Dickel base. As with all Barrell products this is bottled at Cask Strength (just shy of 115 proof) and comes with a very welcome $54.99 SRP. Unlike the Barrell Batch releases, they don't disclose the age of each component. Here is a summary of my conclusions based on information from various interviews and the press release: - Base is a blend of 36% and 21% Rye Mashbill MGP Bourbon aged between 4-7 yrs old - In addition they add 95% Corn Mashbill MGP Bourbon assumed to be around the same age. - They then slowly blend in 10-16yr old Barton and Dickel Bourbon to add oak and sweet notes Let's dive into the tasting... Entry is sweet and rich with a medium viscosity... Nut butter, pecan pie and honey dipped apples lead.... As we hit the mid palate oak, leather and tobacco creep in letting you know there is some well aged Bourbon on the mix... The finish is all spice with cinnamon and clove predominant... The finish is fairly short however. All in all, this is a really enjoyable pour at a great price point. It lacks the viscosity and finish of a decent Barrell Bourbon Batch, however you are saving $45! As far as comparing it to a good MGP 5 yr SiB for around the same $, it's a tough comparison. The profile here is very different and it really depends on your preference. For me this is a really good addition to the market at this price point.
