Teeling Single Cask Carcavelos

Finishing this bottle from a few years ago now that it seems American whiskey is getting interested in white port finishes from the likes of Starlight and High West. Surprised by the amount of bitter space on the front end, almost licorice-y but it resolves into a pleasant and sweet finish. For me, Teeling doesn’t miss.

This single barrel release from 2016 was finished in ex-White Port barrels from the Carcavelos region of Portugal after 12 years in ex-bourbon casks. Teeling claims this finish was a first for any whiskey and it sets a great precedent. It’s sweet and spicy, with notes of hot peppers and an aftertaste of white grapes.

Nose: Flowers, White Chocolate, Honey, Grass, Raisins, Sultanas, Vanilla, Lemon Cake, Butter Frosting, Orange, Apricot, Buttery Cookies Palate: Vanilla, White Chocolate, Raisins, Honey, Caramel, Pears, Pepper, Oak, Flowers, Citrus, Pineapple, Passion Fruit, Papaya, Mango Finish: Raisins, Flowers, Pepper, Cinnamom, Cloves, Milk Chocolate, Ginger, White Chocolate, Cherry

Of the Teeling family, this is the best I’ve had. Strong black liquorish and spice.
