Dark RumAKA Black Rum. Usually aged (but not always) and has additional caramel-coloring added to provide the dark/black color. Some are distilled from blackstrap molasses. No specific type or size barrel required for aging nor is there a set time required for aging in most countries with a few exceptions.

"The aroma of the rum has strong molasses and vanilla notes up front with artificial fruit notes of strawberry, banana and cherry taking over when these notes relent. On the palate the rum feels flat and oily; it delivers notes of molasses, baking chocolate, and artificial cherry soda with a medicinally bitter finish. Though designed for mixing, the disappointing flavor profile does not work well with other ingredients as the artificial flavors dominate the other flavors."
