Victoria Gin // British Columbia, Canada
Victoria Distillery is located in Sidney, a town on the southern tip of Vancouver Island, just 20 minutes from downtown Victoria, the city the distillery was originally located. After 10 years, they moved to larger digs in 2016 and with the move came a revamped packaging for their gin. Now the modern packaging suits the contents within; 10 botanicals are used in this gin, which in addition to juniper berries include star anise, cinnamon, and rose petals. It is distilled in batches and is bottled at 45%
Modern GinAlso has been referred to as "Contemporary", "New Western", "New Wave", and "New American". This style is not legally defined. In general, this category of gin, while it does contain juniper, places less of an emphasis on this botanical. Other botanicals not classically used in London Dry gins are often utilized and often highlight botanicals grown in the region the gin is produced. Most produced as either London Dry or Distilled Gins.
"Juniper and citrus notes are light, but present and the rose petals are also used judiciously. The gin is crisp and clean with the juniper and citrus coming through just a bit stronger. The finish shows a minty, licorice note and a touch of berries. Enjoy on the rocks (with or without soda or tonic) or in a cocktail like the Clover Club to compliment the gin."
