Wild Turkey Rare Breed Barrel Proof Rye

Strong spice notes, large bite

Burnt orange in color and good coating legs in the glass. Toasted bread, cereal grain, and dark honey on the nose. Charred oak and brunt sugar, dry spices, pepper, and a little astringent ethanol in the mouth. Feels dry and dusty, kinda thin and one dimensional in the mouth at first blush, but then the grassy minty rye spices begin to build and shine over a looong finish. That's worth waiting for. Add a single ice cube and the profile opens up with more dark chocolate bitter-sweetness without greatly shortening that grassy rye spice finish. At 56+% ABV it's got enough punch to stand up in a cocktail like a Manhattan or mixed with amaro. More later. Rated 5th most exciting whiskey of 2020 by Whisky Advocate.

Nose- subtle mint, faint oak, citrus and lemon zest, sweet nail polish Taste - sweet mint, creamy vanilla, rye spice in the background Finish - medium finish, rye spice coming through and lingering but caramel and sweet mint overpowers Thoughts - this is a fine pour but many of the traditional rye notes are subdued, given it’s only 51% rye. This could be a great option for those branching out from bourbon to rye but IMO, there are better options in this price range.

Great whiskey. The nose seems to have become brighter as my bottle has opened up. Mint and citrus but still sweet with the proof evident but not overwhelming. I'm getting the spice on the palate but more from the proof than the rye spice. A gentle punch in the face without being overwhelmed by pepper and ethanol. Little bit of lingering toffee/milk chocolate bar as it finishes. You can all have your allocated BT bottles... just leave the turkey for me 🥃
