Quite simply...this smells like aged rum with a little bit of rye on the end. Molasses, maple syrup, caramelized banana, butterscotch, and a little pine and dill. Although the rum finish has taken hold, it smells delicious. I am definitely a fan of aged rum and this is oozing with the scents of rum. Perhaps a bit too much. We'll see
Molasses, overripe banana, and dry oak open up and are quite prevalent throughout the whole palate. More pine and black pepper. It is prickly on the tongue. A little bit of cinnamon and nutmeg take a look around but don't stay for long. Nice viscosity and mouthfeel but it doesn't feel as significant on the palate as I expected. Probably because I am expecting to sip on rum because my mind has tricked me into thinking that's what this is because I associate the smell to rum.
I'm not sure if I like this honestly. It tastes more like a harsh rum than a sweet finished rye. Very little of the actual rye whiskey remains. I do enjoy it in a way, but I'm not sure how often I am going to want something like this. I see why this is polarizing.
