Emptied bottle. Candied peanuts, a faint grilled peach note, vanilla, cinnamon. spearmint, ethanol. This bourbon doesn't hide its proof--it's hot. Finishes with a touch or rosin and wax candy--and more ethanol.
My assessment of this bourbon has been all over the map: initially a 3.5 (6/19/22), then a 4.5 (10/8/25; perhaps inflated by a wine review beforehand?), and now somewhere in between. I'm a fan of high-proof whiskey, but this one comes across hotter than it should.
To confirm, I went to my bar to grab a bottle of the closest proof I could quickly find, which turned out to be an Elijah Craig Barrel Proof A124, coming in at 119.0 proof (vs. the Woodford's 118.4). Different distillers, different mashbills; but I wanted to randomly pick a bottle with similar ABV for a reasonable comparison. Even though the A124 is a tad higher in proof, it has a better depth of flavor that is more in balance with the alcohol. The ECBP's silky smoothness highlights the Woodford's sandpapery grit.
This batch of WR's Master's Collection is pleasant, but a bit out of balance. Would I buy it again? Each Master's Collection is unique, and I do consider picking one up when they are released, but don't go out of my way to get them. A gentleman's 4.0 on the Distiller scale.
