I was very hesitant to buy a Tamdhu. I heard many great things and watched many reviews saying great thibgs about Tamdhu as the new Macalan, but i tried their 12 and their Quattro travel exclusive and wasn’t convinced with their delivery. It felt too soft and blend compared to a Glendronach or even a Glenallachie. Then there was a limited time discount on their selection and I found this Batch Strength and decided to try at the store and was surprised. Clearly this one delivers!
It’s natural color and unchilled filtered which is what I always buy now. The integrity is there as well as the flavor profile:
On the nose: starts with a dark dense honey note followed by dates, tobacco, prunes. It’s a dark sweet and dark dried fruits and oak notes. Very good aromas on this one.
On the palate: more on the spicy side, oak spices, but still delivering the dry fruit notes, leather, tobacco and dates.
Finish: the leather and prunes linger a bit more with spices.
Added water:
On the nose: the citrus notes are released with sweetness. It feels like a lemon cake or even a key lime pie, but give it time and the dry fruits, raisins, fig, dates will come back. Delightful aromas!
On the palate: the dry fruits are there with some lemon zest, vanilla and more. Very prolongues flavors.
Finish: oak spices combined with the sweetness of dates and leather.
Overall a tremendous single malt. This is really the reason I love single malts and think it’s superior to other spirits, soecially when matured in sherry casks. Just incredible!
