For some time now, I've belonged to a clandestine clique of whiskey drinkers who don’t really appreciate Johnnie Walker Black.
We use shadowy hand signals and asinine passphrases because we cannot express our views in public without risking our whiskey credibility.
In a dank and dusty den, we meet on a bi-monthly basis and drink unchallenging masterworks like Green Spot and The Balvenie Doublewood.
It’s a heavy burden and we suffer in silence, but we welcome new members if you can uncover our hideaway hangout.
On the other hand, if you want to cast your lot with an opposing faction that includes Robert Mugabe and Colonel Gaddafi that’s your call.

@BDanner yeah, I have Dave Broom's book with mixing recommendations and he rates it 5 star for mixing with soda and same with coconut water. He has it 5+ with ginger ale to indicate a 'must try' but I never have.
JWB with a splash of Club Soda will work if the scotch selection is this and its Red brethren, but I've never purchased a bottle.
@Ctrexman wow, love that analogy!
@SpartaTodd true, though I heard Adolph was more of a highball man...
Love the review! I kinda like JWB as a nice solid honeyed malt with some smoke blend. However on the grand stage of scotch this is just a bit actor that does a lot of commercials too. You recognize the presence but not the talent
You know who I heard liked JW Black??? People that possess the evil gene. People like Walt Disney and Adolph Hitler! (i kid, i kid)
@Whiskali much obliged sir.
Fantastically hilarious review!
@LeeEvolved I saw an interesting site in an article a while ago and just dug it out again. https://www.safeproof.org/ It helps show which places have been reported / convicted of that sorta fraud.
@WhiskeyLonghorn yep, no shame indeed. I recognise I'm in the minority on it and going against the prevailing wisdom. Hence the need for our covert cabal 😁
@1901 no shame in indulging in a little JW Black. My go to when travelling or at weddings with an open bar!
Yeah, I’ve been known to slum it with some JWB from time to time. It’s also the old “don’t ask, don’t tell” that my national, neighborhood restaurant chain’s regular bartender knows I’ll take over the ‘Livet and ‘Fiddich 12 they secretly water down for the plebeians.
@PBMichiganWolverine Absolutely, and I'm sure I'm in the minority on this one. I get that, as @Rick_M, @BeppeCovfefe, and @Evilbiochemist say, it can be a reliable 3 star go-to. On my travels usually Glenfiddich 12 does that. This is not to my preference and I find something is just off or bitter with the finish.
@1901 no shame in a bit of top of the bottom tier stuff. How else will you appreciate the good stuff, right?
@1901 @Rick_M If you cast a glance into the shadowy recesses of the dusty den you'll see a grizzled, white haired figure in grey. 'Tis I (or maybe Gandalf, depending on the day).
black band Walker is much like Old no 7 JD, it's not great but it's not bad, and you know what you are getting, some decent quality whiskey, which in times of need can be like pure gold.
@1901 yes I meant to add that in my comment. This was in Nigeria at that time! So in Africa but West Africa. Johnnie Black and Red where pretty much the only Whisky we got at that time
@dubz480 thanks! That’s no sacrilege in my book! Btw, am i remembering right that you have mentioned that you spent some time in Robert’s neck of the woods?
@Rick_M After a suitable initiation ceremony I think @cascode would be readily accepted into the society. He would certainly class up the joint.
@1901 - when you hang out at some of the cheap bars and restaurants that I do, Johnnie Black is often times the only drinkable Scotch available. It’s my 3 star go-to. I think @cascode will be looking for an application to your secret society. :)
Love the review and the Gadaffi and Mugabe reference! It's especially fitting as my late teens and early twenties were spent in part drinking this one with tons of ice and coke (that's right I said it!) Cheers!
