Distiller’s Friday Roundup – July 24th, 2020

July 24, 2020

This week brings us a few new whiskey announcements including Wild Turkey Rare Breed Rye. American whiskey fans may already be familiar with the brand’s Rare Breed Bourbon. Similarly, this release is also bottled at barrel proof. Additionally in new whiskey releases, Heaven Hill has announced its Spring 2020 release of Old Fitzgerald Bottled in Bond. Despite it arriving in the summer, we are nonetheless excited to see it hit shelves this month.

Additionally, Kilchoman has three new limited editions landing in the US this month. Islay whiskey fans should be on the lookout for those bottles, especially for the Am Bùrach release as word on the street is that there is quite the demand overseas.

Of course we’ve got other news to share including a new rum from Don Q as well as a new ready-to-drink cocktail perfect for Red Sox fans. You can check out the details on these new releases and more in Distiller’s Friday Roundup for July 24, 2020!

Wild Turkey Rare Breed Rye Debuts

Wild Turkey Rare Breed Rye is a blend of 4, 6, and 8 year rye whiskeys. It is bottled at barrel proof, which will vary from batch to batch. For the first release, it is 56.1% ABV. Additionally, this is bottled without chill-filtration.

“At a time when rye whiskey is more widely appreciated than ever before, Wild Turkey continues our longstanding tradition of offering a wide range of rye whiskeys that lend themselves to a variety of cocktails and consumption occasions,” says Master Distiller Eddie Russell. “As a rye aficionado himself, my son Bruce Russell was the catalyst for reminding me of the distillery’s relationship with rye whiskey and the value it plays within our portfolio. It’s with him and other rye fans in mind that we introduce Rare Breed Rye.”

Wild Turkey Rare Breed Rye is available nationwide as of summer 2020 with an SRP of $59.99.

Three New Kilchoman Releases Land in the US

This month Kilchoman has three new limited editions arriving in the US. The Loch Gorm release should be familiar to Islay whisky fans, but there’s a new one-time only release hitting shelves as well. Additionally, there’s a special edition single cask release celebrating the 10th anniversary for the brand in the US.

Kilchoman Loch Gorm (2020 Edition)

Loch Gorm is the name of the series from Kilchoman featuring single malts matured exclusively in sherry casks. The 2020 Edition for Kilchoman Loch Gorm includes single malts distilled in 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2011. All were matured fully in ex-oloroso sherry butts. Only 15,500 bottles were produced from the twenty-one sherry butts for this release with 1,920 allotted for the US. Bottled at 46% ABV, it has an SRP of $120.

Kilchoman Am Bùrach

Kilchoman Am Bùrach is a one-off limited edition release for the brand and is the result of a stillman mistakenly blending port-matured Kilchoman into the Machir Bay release—a bourbon and sherry matured release. After this error, the resulting whisky was then matured for 9 additional years in bourbon barrels before finishing for 6 months in ruby port casks.

The general manager for Kilchoman, Islay Heads, declared this an “Am Bùrach”—Gaelic for “the mess”. Only 10,550 bottles were created with 1,350 allotted for the US. Available as of July 2020, it has an SRP of $135.

Kilchoman ImpEx Cask Evolution Single Cask 14 Year

This is a special edition release selected by Kilchoman master distiller Anthony Wills to celebrate the brand’s 10th anniversary in the US with ImpEx Beverages. The single malt was distilled in 2006 and was only the 32nd barrel ever filled by the distillery. It matured in a first-fill bourbon barrel for 14 years and the single cask yielded 208 bottles. Available as of July 2020, it has an SRP of $220.

New Releases On The Horizon

We try to keep an eye on all of the label approvals that go through the TTB (The Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau) so we know which releases to look out for. Here are a few of the most interesting looking approval submissions we’ll likely see in the not-too-distant future. Keep in mind that ABVs listed are also subject to change.

TTB Label Approvals

O.F.C. Vintage Bourbon 1995

These bourbon releases are named after the O.F.C. Distillery, a National Historic Landmark known today as the Buffalo Trace Distillery.

What We Know:

This new vintage release was distilled in 1995 and it will be bottled at 90 proof. Past releases have been housed in a wooden display box containing a provenance card. The spirit’s crystal bottle historically features real copper lettering inlaid in the bottle.

Coppersea Excelsior Straight Rye

Coppersea Distilling, a farm distillery located in the Hudson Valley, New York, has a new straight rye under its Excelsior range.

What We Know:

This bottle features “Empire Rye” on its label, following the understanding it has with other New York distilleries regarding this new designation. You can read about more about Empire Rye here. As for Excelsior Straight Rye, it’s made using rye and malted barley (which Coppersea floor-malted). These grains were harvested on the brand’s own farm along with neighboring Hudson Valley farms. It’s aged at least two years and bottled at 48% ABV.

Frey Ranch Single Barrel Cask Strength Straight Bourbon

Frey Ranch is a farm-to-glass distillery with 100% of its grains grown on the brand’s 1500-acre farm in Fallon, Nevada.

What We Know:

This single barrel straight bourbon release will be bottled at cask strength without chill filtration. Likely, this label will appear on several single barrel releases with varying ABVs.
