Rhubarb Gin: A Look at this Tart and Refreshing Flavored Gin

July 8, 2020

Lately, gin distillers have been taking gin flavorings a step (or two) beyond the requisite juniper. Some even try to capture a particular season when crafting their gin. This has led to capture one of the most appealing summer flavors: rhubarb. Tart and refreshing, this brightly-hued veggie may call to mind a long-beloved family pie or crisp recipe. But in a gin, it highlights the herbaceous and citrusy notes wonderfully. Rhubarb gin displays a slight sour flavor and proves inviting for additional sweet or spicy elements, like strawberry or ginger. Whether you drink these rhubarb gins over ice, with tonic or in a cocktail, prepare for a nostalgic treat and a wallop of incredible flavor.

Shakespeare Distillery Rhubarb Gin

The pinkish tint hints at the zesty flavor contained in this gin from Stratford-upon-Avon, England’s Shakespeare Distillery. The company’s lemon balm and rosemary tinged Stratford Gin is infused with fresh-pressed rhubarb juice (so expect a bit of sediment) to fully highlight the flavor and color of this delightfully tart stalk. Pair it with soda water for an easy, breezy highball. Or you can go a step further and try it out in a Gimlet for a punch of seasonal flavor.

Edinburgh Rhubarb & Ginger Gin

A traditional garden mainstay across Britain, rhubarb is beloved for its tartness which is often paired with sweet fruit. However, in this application from Edinburgh Gin, rhubarb pairs up with ginger for a tart and spicy kick. Both rhubarb and ginger steep in the brand’s Edinburgh Classic Gin for four weeks to extract color and flavor. Use in a classic Gin and Tonic, a Martini or even in a Gin Fizz. Fun fact: the brand also has a Rhubarb & Ginger Liqueur. Use it in place of sweetener in sour cocktails for added flavor and depth.

Norseman Strawberry Rhubarb Gin

Made in Minnesota at Norseman Distillery, this gin plays off of one of summertime’s most delectable garden pairings: strawberry and rhubarb. As it turns out, it’s as ace in gin as it is in pie. The distillery infuses gin with fresh berries and stalks grown within the state for a subtle, but piquant treat. They recommend pairing topping with tonic, lime juice and Peychaud’s bitters.

Slingsby Rhubarb Gin

North Yorkshire’s Slingsby Gin is known for its range of classic English gins in brightly colored bottles—from a Navy Strength to an Old Tom. So it’s no surprise that they capitalized on another traditional English flavor like rhubarb. Made from a base of the brand’s London Dry Gin, it gets its robust flavor from locally sourced botanicals and rhubarb from the famed “Rhubarb Triangle” in West Yorkshire. Enjoy it topped with prosecco and garnished with a bit of lemon rind to create an effervescent and celebratory cocktail.

Whitley Neill Rhubarb & Ginger

With a bottle as bright and attention catching as the liquid that’s inside, this gin from Whitley Neill combines a variety of potentially divisive flavors. It stars rhubarb and ginger, but also employs the unmistakable flavors of licorice, lemon and sweet orange. There’s plenty of tart and spiced notes to keep your tastebuds from being overwhelmed by sweetness or from the bite of juniper. Over ice or with ginger ale, this flavor-packed gin is a beacon of summer’s best.
