Kornog Breton Peated Single Malt PX Finish 2016 Release An intense, French Single Malt Whisky by Glann ar Mor ("By the sea") Distillery in Bretagne, France made with wooden washbacks, slow distillation & direct fired stills, wormtubs & maturation by the sea, then aged in Pedro Ximénez Sherry casks. It has an elegant birth with notes of Sherry, peat, hints of rhubarb & pepper; while an earthy & rich life adds hints of sea wall, oily pear, iodine, sweet malt, Werther's Original, clove & vanilla that leads to an extremely long death with notes of peat fire & dried fruit. An elegant, Pure Malt Whisky by Brewery Bières de Rè in Rè Island, France made with 100% malted barley, though it might be distilled in more than one location; before being aged for 5 years in new oak barrels: Bourbon, Cognac & finished in Pineau des Charentes barrels. It has a fruity birth with notes of tangy grapefruit, baked apples & cocoa; while a complex life adds notes of fruitcake, figs, cinnamon, chocolate & dried apricot; that leads to a balanced death of medium length with notes of sea-salt toffee. An intense, Peated Beer Cask Finished Swiss Whisky by Säntis Distillery in Appenzell, Switzerland made from malt which was smoked twice over & matured in old beer barrels that were smoked with oak wood. It has an aromatic birth with notes of apple-wood smoke, smoked ham, burnt charcoal, peat & malt; while a complex & silky life adds notes of smoke. smoked ham. A rich, Canadian Whisky crafted with premium Canadian Rye by a former Master Blender for Crown Royal. It has an aromatic birth with notes of birthday cake; while a rich life adds notes of vanilla cake, brown sugar, oak, sprinkles & vanilla icing, that leads to a long & rich death in a birthday cake. I may not be a fan of birthday cakes, but Ensign managed to liquefy it into a bottle for those that do! June / September 2022
