It is crafted with 50% malted barley & grain; water that is snowmelt from the local mountains; then aged in ex-Bourbon, ex-Oloroso Sheery casks before being finish in Mizunara oak barrels that come from trees that are at least 200 years old. It has an aromatic birth with notes of grain, wood, herbs & spices; while a rich & woody life adds notes of oak, sandalwood, barley, cornflakes, vanilla & chocolate; that leads to a long & warming death with more wood notes. A rich, "American style" Japanese Whisky (Bourbon) by Mars Shinshu Distillery in Nagano, Japan crafted with a mash bill of high corn (75%) & relatively high malted barley (25%), then aged in ex-Bourbon casks before being bottled at 45% ABV. It has an aromatic birth with notes of vanilla, butterscotch with stewed apple & strawberry; while a rich life adds notes of ripe d’anjou pears, milk chocolate, quince & toffee; that led to a complex death of medium length with notes of corn & barley. Reviewed October 30, 2024An elegant, Japanese Blended Whisky by the Tokinosakagura / Helios Distillery in Kushu, Japan crafted with peat from the marshes of Hokkaido. A heavily peated Spirit then joins other Okinawa Single Malts in a careful blend after it spends years in American oak casks. Then, the blend is finished in used Japanese Rum barrels. It has a birth in the forest with notes of moss, leaves, hints of vanilla, soft malt & dried apricot; while a balanced life adds notes of spices, peat, earthy smoke & light rum; that led to a long peaty & toasty finish with notes of pepper. Reviewed October 30, 2024Flaviar Single Barrel Selection 2019 Release An intense, Single Barrel Brandy by Joe & Lesley Heron; founders of; Copper & Kings Distillery in Louisville, Kentucky. It is crafted with a blend of 60% French Colombard, 30% Chenin Blanc & 10% Muscat de Alexandrie; with a slow distillation at low temperatures, exclusively in copper pot-stills. It is then aged for 6 years in ex-Bourbon medium-char American White Oak barrels & a further 21 months of finishing in Sierra Nevada Ovila Quad barrels before being bottled at 55.5% ABV. (Ovila Quad is a Belgian-style Abbey Ale that was brewed with monks from New Clairvaux created especially for Flaviar.) It has an aromatic birth with notes of yeast, banana, clove, allspice, mulling spice, cinnamon, dried raisins, dates & walnut; while a bold & spicy life adds notes of dried red fruits, cinnamon, hints of honey, toffee, clove, dark cherry, blackberry, apricot, peach, butter & baked sweet bread; that led to a long & dry death with notes of toasted oak, flowers, vanilla & tannins. It is made with a blend of Kangun, Kakhet, Garan Dmak & Rkatsiteli grapes before being aged for 23 years in Caucasian Oak, with only 3500 bottles released. It has an aromatic birth with notes of dried fruits, nuts & spices; a rich life adds notes of plum, raisin dark cherry, almond & walnut; that leads to a spicy death of medium length with notes of clove, tobacco, molasses, vanilla, oak & a hint of black pepper. The cider is aged for a full year prior to double-distillation; then the resulting spirit is aged for 3 more years in old Limousin oak barrels on site with a small amount of much older Calvados. It has a crisp & tart birth with notes of shortbread & warm cream; while a candied & spicy life adds notes of autumn fruits, lush tannins, hints of caramel & vanilla; that leads to a dry & clean death with hints of hazelnut & mint.
