I tried this neat at room temperature. On this nose, Laird's Applejack reminds me a bit of dark rum, tinged with the tart fruitiness of Granny Smith. It tastes like undersweetened apple pie filling: tart and zingy, with strong notes of vanilla and cinnamon, and finishing with a lingering peppery crispness. It retains some echoes of the cherry booziness of traditional brandy, and also the tarry backnote of molasses that I've detected in rum--which could be offensive if it were too strong, but it's not overbearing here. This wouldn't be my go-to sipper, but it's a welcome on a dark and cool evening.

Espolòn Reposado Tequila
Tequila Reposado — Los Altos, Jalisco, Mexico
Reviewed November 5, 2023 (edited March 11, 2024)Tequila neophyte here, drinking neat and room temperature. The Reposado is a lovely light gold, like pale citrine. It has a really beautiful, alluringly subtle aroma of smoke, toasted oats, and maybe the slightest hint of citrus. On the palate, it's very different: much fruitier and tannic--like eating a bite of orange its rind together. It has a prominent and lingering acidic backbite (excuse the lack of professional terminology...). The enticing smokiness is present, though it takes a backseat to the acidic citrus flavors. As someone who primarily enjoys whiskey, it reminds me a little bit of Scotch, much moreso than bourbon. I certainly wouldn't turn it down if someone offered it to me, though I probably wouldn't select it over other liquors. -
Traverse City Whiskey Co. American Cherry Edition
Flavored Whiskey — Michigan , USA
Reviewed July 29, 2023Tasted on large rock (it's warm here in Houston!). I'll update the review when I try it neat. Nothing complex here; a sweet, slightly sour whiskey that tastes overwhelmingly of cherries and vanilla and not much else. Almost more brandy than whisky, with no afterburn to speak of. It's very quaffable--almost too easy to drink! Still, it's a nice dessert drink, and I bet it would be fantastic in cocktails, especially when tamed by chocolate bitters. -
Old Overholt 4 Year Straight Rye Whiskey (86 Proof)
Rye — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed April 16, 2023 (edited June 12, 2024)Tasting on large rock. This whiskey has a crisp, spicy, woody aroma reminiscent of black or even chili pepper with a whiff of pithy orange like Aperol. It has a very pungent, acerbic tongue-tingling taste reminiscent of peppercorns steeped in vanilla. Straining the imagination reveals a hint of orange pith or maybe unripe pear. I am surprised by professional reviews that picked out dozens of flavors. To me, the vanilla flavor is unshakably overpowering, and while its spicy assertiveness may be preferable in a cocktail, I think it isn't the best for sipping straight.12.5 USD per Bottle -
Without initially knowing what a "modern" gin, I immediately preferred this one to other gins I've tried. It has a lovely citrus-forward scent. It's refreshing to sip and tastes like the zest of an orange--bright with a hint of pepperiness and a mild bitter "aftershock" that isn't overpowering. This is the first gin I've tried that I'd actually be happy to sip cold and neat. If, like me, you've found other gins overwhelmingly herbaceous, I'd give the one of these American-style gins a try. This one is not expensive, so it's probably a good place to start.18.49 USD per Bottle

Glenmorangie The Original 10 Year
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed February 24, 2023 (edited March 11, 2024)Disclaimer: I’m writing from the world of bourbon; this is the first Scotch I’ve seriously tasted! I tried this whisky both neat and chilled on a large rock. It’s much lighter than your average bourbon: pale and golden, like honey in water. Its scent is subtle but reminds me of florals, vanilla, peach, and maybe a hint of spice. The smell of alcohol is almost indiscernible. I would describe this as the most refreshing whisky I’ve ever tasted. It’s crisp and tangy like a underripe pear with a creamy, mouth-filling roundness that makes it satisfying to drink. I found its flavor was predominantly in the front of my palate and tongue, where it lingered and tingled long after swallowing. Only after several seconds did the familiar chest-warming whisky finish appear, subtle as a whisper. Compared to other Scotches I’ve tried in passing, this one is really easygoing, buoyant rather than brooding. I think it would even pair nicely with food. My fiancé gifted it to me upon learning that it’s a great introduction to this branch of the whisky world, and I’d have to agree.50.0 USD per Bottle -
As you'd expect, this is alcoholic candy. It both tastes and smells like the lovechild of vanilla and cotton candy, with an extremely strong aftertaste of vanilla and honey masking the faintest tinge of alcoholic burn. When mixed with other sweet ingredients, it's sickeningly cloying. But it's not terrible to drink neat as a (very!) sweet dessert, and I've found it an admirable substitute for regular vodka + sweetener in many a flip.19.99 USD per Bottle

Wild Turkey Rare Breed Barrel Proof Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed December 13, 2022 (edited March 11, 2024)This is one of my favorite bourbons so far. It’s rich with complex flavors. On the nose, I sense vanilla, green apple, and maybe a hint of pine; it’s very fresh. This bourbon has a round mouthfeel and delectable tastes of maple and toffee, balanced by a brightness that reminds me of unripe banana and an effervescent spicy kick that seems to last for days. I can IMAGINE a better bourbon that’s perhaps a bit less acerbic for the brief moment when it goes down, so I’m leaving room above it in the ratings for this unicorn. But overall, it’s pretty perfect.55.0 USD per BottleCentury Liquor & Wines
