Hooten Young Jack Carr Warrior Proof Special 16 Year Reserve
American Blended Whiskey — Ohio, USA
Reviewed January 12, 2026First sniff, this one smells grown. Oak, caramel, vanilla, and that calm, old whiskey confidence. Nothing sharp, nothing weird. Just smells like it’s been doing this a long time and doesn’t need to prove it. First sip is smooth and loaded. Caramel and vanilla right up front, dark sweetness, oak right where it should be. It drinks easy for the proof. Then the finish shows up and kinda clocks out early. It’s good just softer than I wanted. I wanted a little more punch at the end. This pairs great with something flavorful but not overpowering. A Black Label Royalty fits - rich, dark, edgy, and it fills in that finish the bourbon leaves you wanting. Really solid combo. Bottom line, Hooter Young Jack Carr Warrior Proof Special 16 Year Reserve is mature, smooth, and very enjoyable. Just wish the finish hit a little harder to really lock it in. -
Garrison Brothers Red, White & Bourbon (2025 Release)
Bourbon — Texas, USA
Reviewed January 11, 2026First sniff and that waxy note hits immediately and just kinda parks itself front and center. There’s some sweetness trying to get through caramel, vanilla but the waxy thing won’t move out of the way. Smells odd. Not broken just weird. First sip? Same story. Waxy up front, waxy in the middle, like someone melted a candle near your glass. It’s not awful, but it’s distracting. Then, right at the end, it finally figures itself out. Deep brown sugar, caramel, vanilla show up late like they’re apologizing for being late to the party. Finish is actually solid just wish it got there sooner. Pairing wise? Keep it super mild or honestly skip the cigar. This isn’t a sit and savor pour it’s more of a yeah okay, I see what you were going for pour. Bottom line, Garrison Brothers Small Batch is drinkable but flawed. The waxy notes really hold it back, even though the finish tries to save it. Interesting? Sure. Enjoyable? Not my palette. -
Augusta Old Route 8 Single Barrel Cask Strength Bourbon (House of Bourbon)
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed January 11, 2026 (edited February 23, 2026)First sniff and yeah this one’s got some proof and it knows it. Big caramel, vanilla, oak, and spice all jump out at once like they’re fighting for attention. Smells bold and smells like I’m not stopping at one pour. First sip comes in warm then chills out real quick. Sweet caramel and vanilla up front, spice and oak right behind it. The proof adds flavor not chaos. Finish is long, warm, and absolutely invites another sip even though you probably shouldn’t. This needs a cigar that can hang. Padron 2000 Maduro or Perdomo 10th Anniversary Maduro. Don’t light anything weak. Bottom line, Augusta Old Route 8 Single Barrel is high proof done right. Fun, flavorful, and slightly dangerous -
First sniff is hot and a little funky. Some caramel and corn try to show up, but the alcohol jumps out first and doesn’t calm down. Smells young and aggressive. First sip comes in hot too. There’s some sweetness and oak in there, but it never really comes together. A little bitter, a little weird, and the finish is short and drying. Not awful just not great. Don’t overthink a pairing. If you’re smoking, keep it mild and cheap. This isn’t a bourbon you build a pairing around. Bottom line, Balcones Texas Pot Still is interesting but unrefined. I’d drink it if offered, but I’m not reaching for it.

Knob Creek 18 Year Bourbon 30th Anniversary (2022 Release)
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed January 11, 2026 (edited January 13, 2026)This is what happens when Knob Creek just lets the barrel cook for 18 years and never checks on it. First sniff is big oak. Like old barn wood, leather, and char. Then it calms down a bit and you get caramel, vanilla, and that peanut thing Knob Creek does. Smells big. Smells old. Smells like you should sit down before drinking it. First sip hits hard. Lots of oak right away, then dark caramel, roasted nuts, and some dry spice. It’s thick, it’s intense, and the finish just does not quit. This is not a casual one more pour bourbon. This is a slow down dummy bourbon. You need a real cigar for this. Full-bodied. Padron 64 Maduro, something dark and heavy. Don’t waste a mild cigar on this—it won’t survive. Bottom line, Knob Creek 18 is bold, oaky, and unapologetic. Great bourbon. Small pours. Bad decisions if you’re not careful. -
Wild Turkey 101 12 Year Distiller's Reserve
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed January 11, 2026 (edited January 14, 2026)First sniff? Big oak. Like walking into a rickhouse and immediately feeling confident in your life choices. Vanilla, caramel, brown sugar, and some baking spice follow right behind. It smells old, in a good way. First sip is smooth and full. Toffee, vanilla, a little nuttiness, then that Wild Turkey spice kicks in with pepper and cinnamon. The oak is bold but not drying. Finish hangs around warm and cozy with some tobacco and dark caramel. This one can handle a real cigar. Padron 1964 Maduro is money. OpusX if you want more spice. Don’t pair this with anything weak. Bottom line: Wild Turkey 12 Year is bold, balanced, and dangerously easy to keep sipping. Pour slow… or don’t.
