Old Elk Master's Blend Series Double Wheat Straight Whiskey
Blended American Whiskey — USA
Reviewed March 31, 2023Sweet smell. Pleasant sweet start but the higher proof comes through at the finish. Overall I actually get more flavor notes and less bite with the Wheated than this one. Solid bourbon, but not an every day drinker for me. -
Jefferson's Reserve Pritchard Hill Cabernet Cask Finish
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed March 27, 2023 (edited April 5, 2023)You can definitely get a glimpse of the wine finish when you smell the bourbon. Both neat and with an ice cube you can get a subtle taste of the cab finish but it is more of a normal oaky upfront palate that then finished a bit briny/bitter at the end. Smooth and goes down easy. Can see how it’s good as a change of pace but not a go to for me. -
I thkight this was a very good and easy drinker and with some nice variety to the flavor. Starting neat it was smooth with some citrusy/fruit tang to it followed by nutmeg/spice (but notnspicy). With an ice cube it got much sweeter with more of a banana/custard finish to it. Very good first impression.

Can taste the bit of maple but it’s less overpowering that I anticipated. It’s got a sweetness, but it’s not overbearing and strikes a good balance of vanilla and maple with tannic and just the right amount of heat. Good bottle. Unlike some bottles that can break down pretty quickly with ice, if you want it to smooth out and increase the sweetness to bring out the maple, add a couple cubes.

I haven’t had this straight in years, and coming back to it I actually liked it more than I thought it would. The problem is that at 40% it’s “just a whiskey”. There isn’t really anything that stands out about it, which makes it not that exciting to sip, and not that exciting for cocktails. Good for those times you want a mixer in with your coke just to get a buzz and that’s it.
