Blaum Bros. OldFangled Knotter Bourbon 12 Year
Bourbon — Indiana, USA
Reviewed July 31, 2019 (edited January 6, 2020)Neat. Blast of honey, corn, and baking spices off the bat. Deep, rich and mostly dark nose. Some vanilla and raspberries emerge. Butterscotch. Nice, oily texture on the tongue. Vanilla and raspberries upfront, hint of that honey in the sweetness but transitions to dark, tannic quickly. Those raspberries come blasting through with another wave of vanilla and transitions back to those dark notes. Oak, chocolate finish. Quintessential MGP with a few surprises like those raspberries. -
Neat. Similarities to Blanton’s are evident on the nose but the flavors feel more distinct and easy to pick. Dusty oak, butterscotch, vanilla, baking spice, raisins. A back and forth of high notes and low notes. Very vibrant. Nice creamy mouth feel. Very dark on the tongue. Brown sugar and maple. On the taste, hits with a sudden and quick uppercut of mint and vanilla. Transitions to caramel and butterscotch. Ends with the baking spices and vanilla. Sticks around for awhile. Quite yummy!

Blanton's Straight From the Barrel
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed July 30, 2019 (edited December 14, 2019)Neat. Color notably darker than basic Blanton’s. Nose is Blanton’s turned way up as expected. Caramel, lots of baking space, honey, powdered sugar, deep dark cherry. Cherry pastry even. Really thick texture. All sugar up front. Blast of chocolate (I was not expecting) on the first sip, chased by tons of vanilla and a hint of spice. Legs are mostly vanilla on first sip. Sugar upfront still in the second hit but got some delightful cherry too. Chocolate, vanilla, pastry swirl on the taste still. Okay, this is a really good Barrel. The nose was just Blanton’s turned up but the taste is something totally different and special. Went back to basic Blanton’s immediately after. It’s thin and almost off putting in the head to head comparison. Phew, no regrets getting this SFTB! -
Tumblin' Dice 11 Year Straight Bourbon
Bourbon — Indiana, USA
Reviewed July 30, 2019 (edited January 20, 2024)Neat. Lots of caramel and oak on the nose. Vanilla and cherry with a decent dose of spice under it all. An interesting blend of back and forth high notes and low notes. Swaying from the oak to caramel to vanilla to spice. Hint of mint and maybe even clove as you spend more time with it. On the taste the initial flavors were surprising and dark. Brown sugar, maple, and hint of that spice. Transitions to a hint of orange to a bomb of vanilla. Ends with even more vanilla and a hint of pepper. Legs last for quite a while. Quite a delicious treat! -
Old Fitzgerald Bottled in Bond 13 Year (Spring 2019)
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed July 28, 2019 (edited March 20, 2020)Neat. Vanilla and oak lead the nose with a hint of nuttiness. Cream and berries. Cherries and maybe raspberries. Lots of these light, bright notes wrapped around the oak evening it all out. Really thick on the tongue, surprisingly so. Great flavor on the tongue. Sugar, powdered sugars, and those cherries and berries covered in a bit of maple. Finish brings in all the oak and vanilla. There is almost a pastry shell taste to the legs. Beautiful bottle. Beautiful wheater. -
Wild Turkey Master's Keep 17 Year
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed July 27, 2019 (edited May 30, 2020)Neat. Neck pour. Incredible nose. Oak and vanilla. Cream and berries. Cherries. Hint of pepper. Cinnamon. I could spend an hour just sniffing this. Thicker on the palate than I was expecting at 86 proof. Vanilla and cinnamon all of the tongue. Hits you with spiciness and then mirrors all the flavors from the nose. Oak. Berries and cream. Cherry. It is so oily (the legs are the thickest I have seen) that it just coats all of the mouth and throat. Because of this the flavors actually magnified on the finish and linger for a long long time. This is a definitive Wild Turkey experience. Holy crap. -
Michter's US*1 American Whiskey
Other Whiskey — USA
Reviewed July 21, 2019 (edited September 19, 2019)Neat. Very soft nose in the sense there are no sharp flavors that come out you. Lots to pick out. Oak and spice. Caramel and vanilla cream. Hints of fruit. It’s a beautiful, soft nose on this. The texture is light and fluffy. Not thin as you would expect from the proof. Tons of vanilla sweetness up front. Almost all light, bright notes. The nose gives you these medium and dark notes but they barely pop on the taste. Beyond the powdered sugar and vanilla there is a hint of a fruit, like apricot. A little peppery spice emerges on the finish and that is the flavor that lingers the most. Towards the end I’m starting to get this toasted marshmallow. This is a perfect, refreshing Sunday afternoon whiskey. It’s delicious, but very soft and delicate. Nothing complex, just kick back and enjoy the sweetness. Probably a great intro whiskey if you are looking to introduce a friend more in whiskey. -
Four Gate Batch 1 The Kelvin Collaboration
Bourbon — Kentucky , USA
Reviewed July 19, 2019 (edited February 16, 2022)Neat. Sample from an already opened bottle. The nose blasts you with it’s age and sherry influence initially. Oak and berries gives way to tons of vanilla and baking spice. There is a butter cream around the whole experience bringing all the notes together. I’ve had my nose in this for 30 minutes before tasting. Nice thick viscosity on the tongue. Approaches the tongue with a surprising amount of dark notes. Dark brown sugar. Dark almond liqueur even. On the taste it hits you hard with the sherry. Transitions to the vanilla and baking spices. Legs leave you with that rum influence - vanilla and almond. Legs last a long, delicious time. This might be my favorite sherry finished bourbon. Unlike other sherry influenced bourbons that seem to focus on bright notes and fruits, this one has all interesting dark elements. Makes it unique and interesting on top of being delicious. Still going back to the nose, it’s crazy good. -
Boone County Small Batch Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed July 19, 2019 (edited November 3, 2019)Neat. Hints of oak up front. Lots of fruit. Apples and cherries. Little vanilla. Baking spices mold it all together. Nice mouth feel. Doesn’t come across as thin, but it is light on the tongue. Vanilla cream upfront on the palate. Those spices and fruits come punching on the taste. Carry through to decent legs. It’s delicious. Unfair to compare to 1833, but it does lack 1833’s depth. A lot of the nose and tasting notes rhyme with 1833, but are muted by comparison. This is arguably more approachable than 1833. It’s an approachable, delicious, but a little shallow MGP. Looking forward to trying this again when it opens up a bit. -
Saint Cloud Kentucky Bourbon 2016 Batch #1
Bourbon — Kentucky , USA
Reviewed July 17, 2019 (edited July 17, 2021)Neat. This is different. Funky. But in a good way. Not a typical bourbon. Almost a mix between a bourbon and Irish Whiskey to me. Nose is very approachable, no sign of the youngness or high abv. I get a lot of short bread cookie dipped in some dark caramel. The short bread notes are what take me to a Cask Strength Red Breast, but with these dark undertones. Nice thick mouth feel. Lots of sweet notes and even some oak notes at first. Gives way to that short bread cookie and caramel. Caramel and oak on the finish. I like it but I can understand why some are thrown off by it too. No regrets on the purchase. It’s expensive for what it is, but it’s kinda fun for its funkiness and uniqueness.
