This is smooth and sweet stuff. Caramel and toffee on the nose, which continue on the palate. Top Shelf status immediately granted! This is THE perfect example of why I love bourbon, and how it should be. Added 4/26/24: After nearly two years, and several dozen different bottles later, I was finally able to locate another bottle of I.W. Harper. Had to literally travel across the country in order to acquire it. But I did it! LOL! This is so good. Getting strawberry on the nose — which carries over onto the palate — on this first pour in two years. One of my favorite Bourbons of all.BevMo!

Had this a year and a half or so ago, and I don't think I had a strong enough opinion on it at the time. Last night, while out with friends, I ordered some because they were out of Angel's Envy. I can now honestly say, this is not a favorite. Too spicy and "thin" on the palate. I see it's a "high rye" bourbon, and that would explain it. I don't like those. I prefer sweet, rich and vanilla. 2.5 for not being awful — but just not my thing. Added 8/31/23: My palate is ever-changing and developing. I'm at a hotel bar tonight, and one of the few bourbons they have available is Bulleit... one of the very first bourbons I tried — so I really had no context to put it up against. Moreover, I used to think I did not like bigh rye bourbons. I was wrong about that. I actually like rye very much, I came to realize. This Bulleit is good. It's spicy and a bit smoky — which I like. I also got some nice "licorice" on the finish tonight. Worth an upgrade from 2.5 to 3.0.

Weller Special Reserve Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed April 30, 2022 (edited May 17, 2022)Took me a while to find, but the wait was worth it. Very smooth, and sweet as I'd expect from a wheated. Caramel and toffee on the nose; more of the same, plus some oak and a little smoky tobacco, on the palate; slightly spicy finish. I knew I'd love this bourbon. Will buy again when the opportunity arises.27.0 USD per BottlePavilions -
To be honest, I am primarily a bourbon drinker. Aside from Forty Creek Unity, I've not really sought-out whiskey. So when I took home this bottle, I foolishly thought what I had just bought was the new Double Wheated release (Yes, it helps to read labels thoroughly, but I'm famous for letting my excitement distract me). Instead of returning it, I figured I'd keep it... branch-out a bit — and who knows, maybe I'll love it.....? Well I don't love it, but I don't hate it either. It's good. But for a $69 bottle, I had higher hopes for, and higher expectations from, this Old Elk whiskey. I like wheated bourbons, so I thought this would impress me more. It's got the burn and the spicy smoke I get from many Bourbons. But I'm just not getting much more than that. Maybe I'll have a different take after my second pour. If I do, I'll come back with edits. If not, my rating stands and it'll have proven a "live and learn" experience: I like bourbon(!).69.0 USD per Bottle

Maker's Mark Wood Finishing Series 2021 FAE-01
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed April 17, 2022 (edited July 16, 2022)Caramel, leather and a heavy dose of alcohol on the nose. Smooth and creamy... sweet (apples and cherries), lots of spice, and oak on the palate; medium finish with a hefty supply of heat and more spice. This finished at the top spot in a blind taste test against five other bottles of varying price points, proofs, and age statements. -
Old Fitzgerald Bottled in Bond 17 Year (Spring 2022)
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed April 16, 2022 (edited May 26, 2022)Sorry if this goes against any rules... posting without actually having tasted... Can someone tell me if I will be able to acquire a bottle of this at a normal retail price, or will this release be immediately relegated to the $300+ price point? Thank you. -
Woodford Reserve Double Oaked
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed April 8, 2022 (edited January 8, 2024)Sweet and spicy. I'm getting a lot from this one... Caramel, leather and toffee on the nose; Cinnamon, cherries, licorice and, as the Expert review states, pumpernickel(!) on the palate with a richness that really coats the tongue. Spicy and oaky finish that lingers a bit. This one is special. There are good bourbons, and then there are bourbons like this one. -
Colonel E.H. Taylor, Jr. Small Batch Bottled in Bond Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed March 27, 2022 (edited August 28, 2022)Leather and oak on the nose; Spicy and sweet with a little heat on the palate. An ice cube calms that down, though. Added 8/28/22: Finished my bottle of E.H. Taylor tonight. I see my original taste was a bit brief and vague — when this bourbon deserved a little more attention.... Spicy and sweet, yes. But there's also some maple I'm getting on the palate. Fairly smooth and not as much heat as I originally stated. There are times when I find that a like a bottle very much, knowing it's a fairly simple expression. But this is a bit more complex... with new flavors making themselves known on the finish. This is excellent bourbon. I'm hoping to procure some of the other E.H. Taylor offerings. But I'd be quite happy to locate another bottle of this Small Batch.
