Willett Pot Still Reserve Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed August 6, 2019 (edited October 21, 2020)This always starts of as a “meh” that gets more interesting as I sip it.Some interesting notes on the nose, one of which I cannot place. The taste starts off thin and builds into something a little more full. There is that same odd note as the nose but I still cannot place it. The finish is a mix of grasses and spices (I was getting mostly cinnamon) that is pleasant with a tinge of sugar sweetness that lingers. I keep going back to it but I uncertain if I am enjoying it or if I am just trying to place that one odd note. May purchase again. Edit: Ever so briefly the note was reminiscent of a candy but it slipped away as fast as it happened. -
Note: I am not a fan of flavored whisky. The apple in the whiskey comes across like a hard candy sour apple flavor. It is overpowering on the nose and on the taste. I assume this is not intended to be consumed neat. I tried ice and water but short of drowning the whiskey the apple came through too strong for me. I did find that mixing this 1:1 with Jim Beam Fire made the overall drink tolerable. May drink again if cocktailed or if purchased for me.

I have heard that this product is not consistent bottle to bottle. No idea if true or not. This bottle smells like a rye. The nose has that rye spike on top of a base of smooth, sweet, vanilla. The taste is also rye and an interesting mix of approachable and rye bite. The base is smooth, not a lot going on until the swallow and finish. The finish is where the rye makes itself known with a spike of spice that subsides into a nice tingle on the tongue. The mouth feel is light. After a few sips I found that the rye tingle built and started a little sooner. The rye tingle and spice was still a spike: subtle, then a big spike, to a quick fade, and a nice lingering tingle. I like the lingering tingle more than the flavors. Enjoyable. Would not turn down. May purchase again but not an always have on the shelf. This in an odd spot for me. When I reach for a rye I generally want a more aggressive flavor experience.

On the nose some notes that I associate with young also dusty and sweet. Taste is inoffensive and has a cereal finish. The rye comes in about half way through, tingly and black pepper, and holds on into the finish. Adding a little water accented the cereal notes. I read some tasting notes and people mentioned pink bubble gum. After reading that I can pick it out, the cereal notes I get are reminiscent of the powder coated pink bubble gum stick from card parks. Ice made the proof and cereal more prominent and killed the other notes. Interesting and not like anything I remember having. I find myself trying to figure out the notes and what makes this so different from what I have had before as opposed to enjoying.

Tried this after Balcones Brimstone. This is lighter on the smoke with some peat notes on the nose and palette. Just starting my journey in peated whisk(e)y. I found the peat and smoke enjoyable on the nose but lite on the palette. Overall I found the taste light and one note. The nose is more interesting than the taste. I did put this with cola and found it amazing. I may not be able to do other whiskey cola after trying a peated whiskey cola.
