Stagg Jr Barrel Proof Bourbon Batch 1
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed October 20, 2017 (edited February 21, 2018)I couldn’t pass up the chance to try out something bearing the Stagg name even if it is “Jr.”, but for the price and reputation behind the brand I wasn’t overwhelmed. It’s a nice amber color and you get strong cinnamon and brown sugar on the nose. Pretty much the same on the palate, the cinnamon is strong and spicy with a medium finish that is a calm warming which was unexpected for a Barrell Proof bourbon. There is a lot more flavors to pick up on then what I just listed, but those classic flavors of cinnamon and brown sugar are what stood out to me making this bourbon not so surprising. Although I don’t always love being surprised so I did enjoy this bourbon, but it isn’t up there on my all-time favorites. I had a couple glasses for my first try and I am going to revisit it soon to see if I still feel the same. That being said, I do encourage all to try it if they can get their hands on it! -
The color in the glass was a honey. I got an outright spicy alcohol scent on the nose with oats and pumpkin spice. It was creamy in the palate with a strong mixture of spices that I could not specify. I also got cinnamon and herbs, with the classic hints of caramel and oak. I enjoyed the very long warm finish, starting with a soft early warmth and slowly ending on a powerful spicy warmness. I really enjoyed this bourbon especially the nice long finish, but I think there is better tasting stuff for less money available although its all preference! Give it a try no doubt!
