Light caramel color, then caramel and vanilla on the nose with slight stone fruit. Follows through on the palate with the caramel, initially mellow, with some fruit-forward honey notes, plus a touch of spice, then the smoke kicks in, and it trails back off to a nice long sweet finish. Very pleasant!

Auchentoshan Three Wood
Single Malt — Lowlands, Scotland
Reviewed December 17, 2021 (edited May 16, 2022)Wow! The deep caramel amber color is immediately a surprise. It looks like maple syrup. The nose is rich, sweet scents of dark carmel, toasted marshmallow, molasses, and a bit of rich fruits. Sweet on the palate, but not as overwhelmingly as expected after the color and smell. More rich sweet tastes, then a smokey hit that's right at home, finished with a mild spicy heat. -
Rebel 100 Kentucky Straight Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed December 16, 2021 (edited February 8, 2023)Beautiful deep amber color. Cookies and toffee on the nose. Sweet taste, with more cookies, and a hint of rich fruits. Pleasant hot finish. Nice drinker, if still a little one-note. -
Not particularly exciting, but not bad either. I find it sort of generically scotch-y. If I wanted to introduce someone to scotch without overwhelming them, I might start here. Pretty mellow across all the tasting notes -- some vanilla, some peat, some smoke, some brine -- but it's like someone set all of the equalizer knobs to medium. It would benefit from peaks and valleys.

Green Spot Chateau Montelena Single Pot Still
Single Pot Still — Ireland
Reviewed December 9, 2021 (edited December 12, 2021)Nose is maybe apple and vanilla, but I struggle to get past a hot medicinal note. Medium amber color with slow-forming legs. Immediately sweet vanilla taste, then a rather harsh oak and burn. Lingers pleasantly for a long time after the punch in the face. How appropriately Irish!
