Seagram's 7 Crown American Blended Whiskey
Blended American Whiskey — USA
Reviewed June 29, 2020 (edited October 31, 2020)It has a dark color, so that's obviously artificial. The nose smells pretty much not there, with some light, fake caramel and a touch of fruit. The palate is weak and it immediately tastes artificial. There are a few flavors here, but none of them stand out as anything more than a weak attempt to taste like whiskey. It's very watered down and has a sugary sweetness mixed with artificial caramel. The mild fruit flavors taste more like a scratch and sniff smells than like actual fruit. In a direct comparison, Paddleford Creek tastes much more real and has more flavor, though it is still a weak whiskey. This isn't as bad as I feared it would be, but it tastes. A heck of a lot like nothing and the flavors that it does have are not very good. I wouldn't call this a disappointment because I didn't expect more, but I certainly don't like it. My palate is toasted now, but it might be even worse than the 8 I'm giving it. No, the 7 I'm giving it. This is priced way too high - at least get Evan Williams Black instead. Wow, this is so much worse than Evan Williams Black. If my palate were in better shape, I'd probabaly cry in anguish. The palate is kind of oily with a gross gasoline flavor that brings in a bit of smoke mixed with some bad youthful sweetness. There's quite a bit of flavor, but it's bad flavor. This isn't absolutely undrinkable, but it's very bad. It doesn't have the richness of Clan MacGregor, but it also doesn't have the disgusting sulfur. Clan MacGregor has a nice bit of fruit too, but the sulfur is really bad. This has less flavor and its flavor is bad, but it almost could be mixable. It's hard to say which is worse between these two, but I think I'll still give that ignoble victory to Clan MacGregor. When I say that this could be mixed though, I mean that it might be possible to conceal with enough fruit juice. It tastes disgusting and the price is absurdly high.11.0 USD per Bottle -
Sauza Signature Blue Silver Tequila
Tequila Blanco — Tequila Valley, Jalisco, Mexico
Reviewed June 29, 2020 (edited May 1, 2021)It smells like tobacco - well, an ash tray really. There are some sour notes that hint at vegetation and a bit of lime, but also smell strongly like tobacco. It's surprisingly smooth with a huge amount of smoke and iodine. It has some sweetness, but not a tremendous amount. There's some stuff going on here, but it isn't terribly complex and the flavors that are here aren't terribly good either. The second tasting is much better, but still not that good. It's quite bitter with a lot of herbal elements. There's some fruit like lemon and underripe pineapple with maybe a hint of lime. It's a solid mixed, but not a sipper. That bitterness is hard to overcome and it still tastes a bit off. I have no idea why the Distiller reviewer thinks that this is fruity and sweet. As far as I can tell, it's bitter with minerals and other unappealing flavors. There's some nice fruitiness, but then it tastes like a tire fire. Good Lord, is this the Clan MacGregor of tequila? The bitter punch in the face at the front masks see more interesting fruity and vegetal flavors. It reminds me a bit of a cross between Cabeza Blanco and Fortaleza Blanco, but generally worse. The subtle hints of character are nice, but they're too subtle.15.0 USD per Bottle -
Tequila San Matias Gran Reserva Extra Añejo
Tequila Extra Añejo — Los Altos, Jalisco, Mexico
Reviewed June 29, 2020 (edited September 7, 2022)This is a weird tequila. It tastes a bit like a Sherry bourbon. This flavor is strong with a lot of cherry and a rounded nature that includes wood and some subdued spices. The flavors are good, but the cherry is strong. It doesn't taste like cough syrup. This is a good and interesting drink, but may not be a good choice for someone looking for a good tequila. The wood is very present and is developed well without tasting like floor polish. This drink tastes like a wiskey mixed with a brandy with a little bit of banana fruitiness. The finish tends toward the bitter side and it is good but needs some help in improving the core flavor. There's a lot of flavor and some herbal elements that make this interesting, but it's not as refined as Don Julio 1942. It tastes a bit like a mezcal. The rich, varied flavor is good, but the cherry element might be a bit much and there is no brilliant flavor here. That said, I enjoy it and the alcohol does not overwhelm. Wood is there and builds out the flavor without tasting too much like floor polish. Given the price, this is an excellent buy. The flavor is balanced and tasty. Everything lands nicely unless you are particularly (and I mean particularly) sensitive to cherry cough syrup flavor. It is reminiscent of plenty of mezcals but is more balanced and generally rich. Smoke, iodine, cherry, sweet, tart, wood, toffee. The balance here is exceptional and the flavor is brilliant. This is an odd tequila, but an excellent drink. It's sometimes infiltrated by a bit of alcohol flavor, but is mostly unperturbed. It smells distinctly of roasted sweet peppers and onions. The palate has both of these flavors but also has some nice fruit. Some caramel darts through too. It's fairly rich but isn't oppressive. This is a very complex tequila that is balanced in an interesting way. There is some wood and also a little smoke but those original notes do keep coming through. A little bit of cherry comes out of the peppers in a surprising way. This is an exquisite tequila at an unbelievable price. This is a truly amazing tequila. It may be a bit harsh, but it is pronounced, representing everything that makes a tequila. Spice, pineapple, grape soda, lime, caramel, vanilla, wood. This actually starts to taste like a bourbon. I wouldn't say it's the most complex tequila, but it is balanced in a weird way. The fruitiness lasts for a long time and tastes very good. Mint is there to add some dryness, but it doesn't taste out of place. The flavors don't fit together in that way that is quintessentially tequila. The wood can really sneak up because it isn't just oak: some cedar notes come through (and somehow they don't overwhelm). This is a delightful tequila.38.0 USD per Bottle -
The nose is richer with more chocolate than regular San Matias. It has a really weirdly oily smell going on with something a bit rancid, but not sulfuric - it's like pureed cauliflower. The cauliflower tastes like Clan MacGregor and it isn't good, though it vaguely works a bit in a tequila. The palate is quite viscous with a rich sort of malty presence that has gross bread for sure, but in a rich dignified way that is kind of enjoyable. It's sweet but enjoyable. The flavor can be a bit mineral and watery, but it doesn't taste light. The richness and oiliness seem like good base flavors for something, but they're a way from a complete profile. It's a bit odd and mainly has its richness and viscosity going for it. Lunazul has more going on in its flavor profile, so I kind of prefer it. This isn't substantially worse though. The weird tip that salvages this tequila is that it goes great in eggnog!15.0 USD per Bottle

Saint James XO rhum vieux agricole
Aged Rum — Martinique
Reviewed June 29, 2020 (edited March 11, 2023)It smells a bit like cardboard with vanilla and floral notes. The nose is surprisingly light though with a bit of mineral and a hint of squash, but in a sweet, good way. It has an interesting flavor thatcs ligght and fresh, like can rum, but without that disgusting squash youth. It has a bit of a 12 year old Scotch flavor to it from the barrel - sweet with some caramel. It isn't bad, though it isn't terribly exciting either. The finish is clean too without too much bitter char. The baking spices are nice with some nice clove and cinnamon along with the vanilla. It has decent complexity, but not a ton. There's more minerality, which I'm not a big fan of, but the complexity is decent.60.0 USD per Bottle -
It smells sweet with caramel and spice. There's a tad of smoke on the nose. It's not excessively sweet at first, though some light caramel does come in. There's a bit of alcohol presence and the fireworks don't really stand out all that much. It's fairly light on the palate and a tad watery. None of the flavors really stand out though. It tastes fine, but isn't anything special. It tastes a bit young and it lacks some complexity. It tastes maybe like column still molasses.23.0 USD per Bottle

I tasted caramel and Madagascar vanilla in this rum. It doesn't have much more depth than that, but the flavor does change over time. Despite the floral notes, this is the most rich and robust spiced rum I have tried in this price range. It has a nice, balanced sweetness and does not taste at all watery.14.5 USD per Bottle

It tastes like rye for sure. It's a bit brighter than most with a dry rye presence taking the front line alongside a strong mineral flavor. It has that Russell's Reserve cinnamon spice punch to be sure. There's enough sweetness, but not enough robustness. There's a little wood here, but not much. It isn't very complex, unfortunately. This could use a lot of work.37.0 USD per Bottle

Ron Zacapa 23 Sistema Solera Rum
Aged Rum — Guatemala
Reviewed June 28, 2020 (edited December 11, 2020)This rum has a lot of whiskey characteristics and I love it for that. There is a bunch of richness mixed with Earth and smoke that brings in some rye tartness. There's a good amount of molasses too. It's a lot more interesting and palatable than Plantation 20th Anniversary. There are a few layers going on here and the net flavor really works. This is a rum to hold as an example of what good rum can be. Compared with many scotches, this is smooth and sweet but also bland. It's otherwise very good though. There is some nice hogo going on, which starts to bring out the complexity. It's rich with a mix of bitter and sweet. It's balanced subtlety for rum, but compared with other drinks it's kind of bland. It has woodiness to the point that it tastes a little like whiskey. It's just the right sweetness and while it isn't as complex as Plantation Trinidad, it is rich and hedonistic with a delightful finish. The nose is richer than most runs, smelling quite a bit like a sherried scotch. That must be the solera aging. The Sherry and bourbon flavors come out immediately. Bourbon lovers will appreciate this for sure. It has some of that bourbon tartness and a bit of bite too, though it is still quite smooth. The Sherry comes through, though less so. There's some of that dry Sherry flavor (though some of that is definitely the bourbon), but also some of that rich sweetness of Harvey's Bristol Cream. There's a fair amount going on here, though it largely boils down to the rum tasting a lot like bourbon - and that bourbon is a lot like Evan Williams Black with some Jim Beam Black, not really like one of the better Booker's, George Dickel Bottled In Bond, Garrison Brothers (possibly good that it doesn't taste like this), McKenna 20, or Joseph Magnus. Essentially, it tastes on the tart and light end of bourbon, though they could be because I'm drinking it right after Ron Diplomatico. There are clear rum flavors here but also strong bourbon flavors. There's a solid amount of Sherry too, but the former two flavors are much stronger. The richness is great and there is a fair amount going on and it all balances out, but ultimately this is a tad harsh and tastes a bit much like low-end (though not awful) bourbon. It tastes a bit more like an experiment in bourbon than a rum. It's very good, but a bit confused. It isn't the 19 I thought previously (unless a fresh palate changes things), but it is quite good. There's a bit of spearmint in here too that is kind of odd (though not shocking for a bourbon), but does kind of work.35.0 USD per Bottle -
Ron Diplomático Reserva Exclusiva Rum
Aged Rum — Venezuela
Reviewed June 28, 2020 (edited August 3, 2020)Full with a nice balance of sweetness and bitterness backed by a rich undertone. Creaminess and caramel are clearly present at the front, as are fruit and spices. This is a lot like a spiced rum, but is way better than most of the garbage out there. Not too harsh. I just wish that the flavor developed a bit more, the sweetness were a bit less, and the wood did not jump in so much in the middle. Not as rich as Foursquare 2004 and also not as packed with alcohol. The richness and lack of bad flavors really make this rum stand out. It has a lot of caramel but the abundant hogo really balances it out. Everything is in nice balance. There's a fair bit of banana that is under control, a big molasses note, and the hedonistic element just goes on and on. Some more complexity would be nice but it is drinkable as is. The nose is very sweet and fruity with tropical scents that give a bit of a fruit roll-up vibe with a tad of sugar crystal. The palate is super sweet with moderate to full viscosity. It has tons of tropical fruit, with passionfruit, banana, and mango being prominent, alongside a tad of strawberry. It's smooth and creamy. There's a decent amount of oak that avoids being bitter and overwhelming. There's some butterscotch and brown sugar in the sweetness for sure. There's some spices like those in Plantation 20th, though they are relatively less pronounced. There's also a bit of herbal flavor, sort of like in a tequila or Jagermeister. It actually has decent complexity, but it's almost more of a digestif like Jagermeister is with its richness, herbalness, and sweetness. I'm leaving it at a 17 for now, but it might be an 18.30.0 USD per Bottle
