Balvenie Doublewood 12 Year
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed December 29, 2019 (edited May 20, 2020)Simply average. There's a constant taste of grapes or red wine throughout for me that I can't embrace. On the sweeter side with cherry and berry red fruit. Rich cake and mellow spices. It lacks depth and sips more like a dessert. -
Glen Scotia 15 Year
Single Malt — Campbeltown, Scotland
Reviewed December 27, 2019 (edited July 24, 2021)This worked it's way into my top rotation of sippers. It's the mix of highland fruit with the smoke and sea of Islay that really excited me in this Campbeltown offering. Sweet honey and apricot. Charred oak, citrus rind with spices. A puff of smoke hangs over and mellows it all out. Really love this and keep coming back to it. A top 5 bottle in my rotation. -
As a huge Islay lover....Not a fan. Smoke and then some salt are immediately present, followed by some honey and grass. There never seems to be a moment that jumps out and grabs with a distinguished taste. It's mellow the whole way through in a boring way, not a balanced way. The lack of complexity screams young whisky masked with charred barrels and heavy, smoked peat. If I'm having smoke, I want Ardbeg or Lagavulin where I can taste the earth. If I want salt I want Old Pulteney or Bruichladdich where I can taste the sea or salted barely. If I want a mix I'll sip a Campletown offering. This just hits with peat smoke and rolls away into nothing. Let down.

Colonel E.H. Taylor, Jr. Small Batch Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed December 27, 2019 (edited May 20, 2020)Bubble gum coats the tounge. Citrus hits, smooth vanilla, and rye. Ends with some toasty wood and smooth warmth of spices. Chew it and get some grass or hay. Not sweet, not spicy, not too hot...rich and warm. Chocolate flavors. Very good stuff. Tops of my sipping bourbon list currently. And in the $50-$60 range! -
Angel's Envy Rye Finished in Caribbean Rum Casks
Rye — USA
Reviewed December 25, 2019 (edited May 20, 2020)Sweet. Can taste the rum notes. Vanilla, cinnamon/fireball (candy) finish and rum. Sherry and oak. And rum. And more rum. -
Glengoyne 15 Year (Discontinued)
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed December 12, 2019 (edited August 16, 2020)Vanilla, rich, butterscotch or toffee. No smoke, not sweet. Full flavor and allspice on the back of my tounge. Butter and oak on the exhale. It's actually very unlike most I've had, in a good way. OP12 and Bruichladdich Barley mixed together but without the sea...not a bad combo. -
Tamdhu Batch Strength Batch 004
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed November 28, 2019 (edited July 24, 2021)Spash of water, neat. Very good. Smooth with some heat. Oak and walnut nose, sweetness. Oak, Christmas spices, biscuits. Fruit on finish... berries. Has an almost higher quality Walker (I hate you, JW) peat puff but very mellow. Flavors of Gen Scotia 15. Not a Sherry bomb; simply adds some profile.
