Benchmark No. 8 Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed September 9, 2020 (edited September 18, 2020)Not bad at all, but a little too sweet. Vanilla, oak spice and marshmallow. There’s a trace of erythritol syrup on the finish that I don’t love, but otherwise the finish is nice and spicy. Solid classic bourbon. -
Glenfarclas 12 Year
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed September 3, 2020 (edited September 16, 2021)Wow. I just took the first sip. At first, it tasted very similar to the basic finished offerings from the Balvenies and Glenmorangies of the world, malted barley, butterscotch and a little fruit. Which is great. But then the beat dropped and I was in it. In it. Sherry and spice took over. And then kept dancing, and dancing, and dancing. And dancing. Man. The finish lasted about as long as it took for me to finally pull the trigger on this scotch. Excellent 12 year, and not expensive at all. -
Ironroot Esoteric
Blended American Whiskey — Texas, USA
Reviewed September 2, 2020 (edited February 9, 2021)The nose is exactly like the smell of being out camping and unzipping your tent in the night or early morning, the fabric of your rain cover beset with dew. To me, it smells wonderful and it’s extremely nostalgic. Taking my first sip, it’s bright. I can taste the copper pot still, and as opposed to most metallic-tasting whiskies, I actually enjoy it. It certainly has the characteristic Ironroot rich mouthfeel and some herbal notes. Unique and complex. I like it a lot. -
Booker's Bourbon Batch 2020-02 "Boston Batch"
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed September 2, 2020 (edited September 18, 2020)Oak, caramel and savory herb like sage or bay leaf. The palate is rich brown sugar and heavy cinnamon. It doesn’t drink as hot as it is. Rich, yummy, good finish. Some rye or pumpernickel bread on coming back to it. -
Balcones Texas Single Malt Rum Cask Finished
American Single Malt — Texas, USA
Reviewed September 2, 2020 (edited October 12, 2022)Light honey on the nose, plus light pecan and also some crescent roll. Going back, some rich sweet grape jam. I get some of that sugar cane right off the bat on the palate, along with obvious barley and some heat. The finish drops off fairly quick, but this guy is a stud. Well-balanced sweetness, which I wasn’t expecting from a rum finish. -
Wilderness Trail Family Reserve Single Barrel Cask Strength Bourbon (Wheated Bourbon)
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed September 2, 2020 (edited July 11, 2022)This was alright. I got ethanol and oak on the nose. Ethanol, oak, brown sugar and light menthol on the palate. The finish was a short burst of distinct bitter dark chocolate. -
Jack Daniel's Single Barrel Barrel Proof Tennessee Whiskey
Tennessee Whiskey — Tennessee, USA
Reviewed September 2, 2020 (edited October 14, 2020)This is yummy. I got boujee spiced berry compote on the nose. Like something you’d get at a trendy brunch place on Magnolia St in FW. The palate is pretty complex, with graham cracker, vanilla, marshmallow, and then wood char on the finish.
