Little Book Chapter 6: To the Finish
Blended American Whiskey — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed November 11, 2022Subtle and mellow aroma belies a pleasant and welcome heat that's comes in two waves. First is peppery and quickly intense, followed by a slightly more intense heat that leaves you warm with notes of tobacco, caramel, and oak. Very nice bourbon, I would easily recommend this to others.Beckham Hotel -
Widow Jane Lucky Thirteen Small Batch Bourbon (Fall 2021)
Bourbon — New York, USA
Reviewed October 7, 2022 (edited April 19, 2023)This is one of my favorite bourbons. Such a wonderful flavor profile with just the right amount of heat mixed with a great flavor at the front that mellows and matures in the mid notes and finishes really well. If you can find this bourbon, buy it! You will not be disappointed. -
Woodford Reserve Master's Collection Five-Malt Stouted Mash
Other Whiskey — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed October 7, 2022 (edited January 7, 2024)Although there is a lovely sons of dried apricot, this is a rather bland whiskey with a very flat flavor profile. This might be good for first timers who don't normally care for whiskey. There is very little heat but what there is comes in during the transition to the mid notes and then fades off. Really nothing more to the flavor profile in my humble opinion -
Wyoming Whiskey Private Stock Bourbon
Bourbon — Wyoming, USA
Reviewed October 7, 2022 (edited August 31, 2023)Nice front notes of tobacco and leather with a pleasant heat that comes in and builds quickly to the mid notes. From there it takes off gently. Not a complex flavor profile but still quite pleasant. Would not recommend this one over the rocks, this is better taken neat. -
Woodford Reserve Master's Collection Batch Proof 128.3
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed October 7, 2022Solid great to front with notes of caramel. Heat fades slowly over the mid into the end notes. Not a robust or complex flavor profile but still very tasty. -
Puncher's Chance Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed October 18, 2020 (edited September 10, 2022)Wow! This is an amazing bourbon with a wonderfully rich and sweet flavor profile. Neat or on ice are both equally good. Low burn/bite on initial taste, with smooth, sweet flavors of vanilla and caramel. Medium oak flavors on the mid notes with a slightly heavier taste profile but well balanced. The tastes blend beautifully from initial to miss to what I personally feel is an amazing finish of Maple syrup notes. I think I just found my new favorite bourbon. -
I think it's important to talk about our "house" bourbon. We can't all afford to drink top shelf bourbon all the time. So, if you are like me, you have a house bourbon that's your inexpensive go to most of the time. For me, Evan Williams green label is it. I rated this a bit higher than it's flavor profile should allow but that is because at around $20 for 1.75L, this a solid, decent "everyday bourbon". This is a bourbon with some bite, so I prefer it over ice to soften that and bring out more of the flavor. Starting notes are smokey, with a fair amount of sweetness. This is masked to dinner degree by the ethanol taste when served neat but really stands out when softened with the right amount of water. For what some consider a low end bourbon, it has a surprisingly robust flavor profile. With undertones of clove and tabacco and overtones of wood and herbs that I haven't been able to identify yet. I highly recommend this as a go to bourbon in the home.

Maker's Mark 46 Cask Strength
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed August 9, 2020 (edited December 20, 2021)This is a great bourbon. Starting notes are sweet, with vanilla, but tempered with a decent bite that balances out the initial profile. I find that I like it even better over ice to soften and enhance the flavors but it's excellent served neat as well. This is a smooth bourbon, even at 110 proof. Finishing notes are on the dry side with a nice oak accent, hints of tabacco and overtones of vanilla. This is one of my favorite bourbons to date. -
Strong bite with heavy oak and rye notes. Virtually nothing else for first note flavors. This is not a smooth or subtle bourbon. Prefer to drink this over ice and let it sit for a good while to mellow the overly strong initial bite and pick up a little of the vanilla and caramel notes in the finish.
