Jack Daniel's Single Barrel Barrel Proof Tennessee Whiskey
Tennessee Whiskey — Tennessee, USA
Reviewed May 7, 2021 (edited August 30, 2021)Barrel 21-03012 Rick L-28 Bottled 4-1-21 125.7 proof 62.85% ABV Copper color. The nose is a cinnamon bomb, with ground cinnamon and Big Red cinnamon chewing gum, and faint notes of peanuts and cedar. Mouthfeel is lite; initially very hot but diminishes quickly. A lot of flavors explode across the palate but fade quickly: Cinnamon-flavored toothpicks, Dr Pepper cola, dried tobacco, new leather, an herbal gin-esqe note like juniper, both oak char and raw oak, and faint buttered popcorn. There is practically nothing on the finish. The only notes that stay for any period of time are a watery cinnamon and dry, tannic raw oak. I'm not a fan of Jack Daniel's and I came into this with pretty low expectations. The nose got me excited - I could nose this all night. Everything after that pretty much lived down to my initial expectations. There are things to like about the palate but they don't stay with you long enough to enjoy. The bottle says barrel proof but my palate says weak and diluted.57.0 USD per BottleWegmans -
Golden honey color. The nose has notes of smoked meat, ocean spray, turpentine, dried sea weed and wet earth, with a hint of honey. The mouthfeel is hot and heavy. The palate has oven roasted bacon, sea salt, freshly laid asphalt, deep fried turkey skin, faint bandaids, and a light honey sweetness, with faint cocoa powder and dark cherries. The finish is long, hot, and smokey, with notes of brisket, campfire, oak char, and a very faint note of cherry cola. This is excellent and makes me hungry.94.0 USD per BottleGordon's Fine Wines and Liquors

Don Amado Joven Rustico Mezcal
Mezcal Joven — Oaxaca, Mexico
Reviewed April 6, 2021 (edited June 19, 2022)The nose has notes of green peppers, a wet minerality like being in a limestone cave, and smoldering campfire ash after a light rain. Warm, slightly oily mouthfeel. The palate has an excellent earthy sweetness, with green peppers, heavily charred marshmallows, bay leaves, black pepper, faint orange peel and lime zest, and a gentle smokiness. The finish is long and mineraly, with lingering black pepper, citrus and a wisp of smoke. Overall, this is incredibly light and refreshing. I could see this becoming a nightly sipper, especially on hot summer nights (or afternoons).55.0 USD per BottleWhole Foods Market -

Reviewed March 23, 2021 (edited March 24, 2021)This is a review for the 5 year old Queen's Share Distiller's Drawer. Release #116 119 proof Golden color. The nose has campfire marshmallows, brown sugar, vanilla and toasted cinnamon stick. Rich, creamy mouthfeel. The extra age shines on the palate with ample spicy oak, creme brule crust, flambeed bananas dusted with allspice, cinnamon apple pie, hints of sea salt, peppermint and sandlewood. The finish is medium-long, dry and oaky, with strawberries and cream, dry grass, and more baking spices. Drinks like a bourbon more than any other rum I've tried.90.0 USD per BottleCambridge Spirits -
Maker's Mark 46 Cask Strength
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed March 20, 2021 (edited June 14, 2021)Caramel color. The nose reminds me of Christmas with a fragrant sweet and spicy wood note similar to potpourri, along with caramel drizzled over vanilla ice cream. Medium bodied. Lots of oak on the palate, with hints of that potpourri note from the nose that lends a somewhat soapy flavor. Overall, the palate is more spicy than sweet, with notes of raw cinnamon stick, nutmeg, and white pepper, with a touch of salted caramel. Finish is medium-length and dry, with more oak and baking spices, faint caramel with a mild but lingering grassy/tannic quality. Like most things from Maker's, it's decent but not something I'm going to reach for very often.67.0 USD per BottlePorter Square Wine & Spirits -
Hampden Estate Pure Single Jamaican Rum Overproof
Aged Rum — Jamaica
Reviewed March 8, 2021 (edited April 3, 2022)Amber color. Strong aromas of over-ripe banana and blackstrap molasses, with banana nut bread, dark caramel, ripe mango, faint menthol and iodine. Palate has more banana nut bread, blackstrap molasses, mild iodine, dark fruits and oak, with a faint note of malted barley. Finish is long, warm and dry, dominated by the blackstrap molasses, with lingering notes of iodine, muscadine grapes, faint saltwater and cigar ash. The more I sip on this the more of the white grape note I get on the finish, to the point you might think this is finished in wine casks. This is beautiful.68.0 USD per BottleBall Square Fine Wines -
Light amber color. This stuff is probably not for a novice rum drinker. The nose has over-ripe bananas, mango, vanilla ice cream, and a little menthol. The palate has caramelized bananas, pineapple, papaya, raisins, candied orange peel, green apple peel, oak, with hints of gasoline, petroleum jelly, and burnt coffee. The finish has vanilla extract, tropical fruit medley, oak, petroleum jelly, and wet leaves. When I first cracked the bottle I found this extremely enjoyable. When I came back for a second pour the next day the gasoline note seemed more pronounced, but not dominant or off-putting. This is the first thing I've tried out of Hampden Estate. It's incredibly complex and challenging but makes me want to seek out Hampden's own bottlings.19.0 USD per BottleLiquor Junction

Maker's Mark Wood Finishing Series 2020 SE4 x PR5
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed February 24, 2021 (edited September 3, 2021)Amber color. Nose has intense vanilla and caramel apples with notes of bubble gum, maple syrup, cinnamon stick and honeysuckle. Mouthfeel is a little lite. Palate is a caramel bomb with fresh warm caramel and caramel candy dusted in powdered sugar, vanilla bean, maple sugar, sweet oak, Red Hots cinnamon candy and a little leather and ethanol. Finish is medium-long, hot and dry. The caramel note continues, with lingering oak, toasted grains and cinnamon apples. This isn't super complex, but if you're a bourbon fan it feels like home. I could drink this all night.89.0 USD per BottleTop Shelf -
Deep amber color. Feels viscous on the nose, with notes of vanilla bean, butterscotch, caramel, condensed milk, allspice, freshly ground nutmeg, hints of leather and faint pineapple. Mouthfeel is very enjoyable but not quite as luscious as some other Foursquare vintages. Palate is ridiculous and in some ways reminiscent of a fine Sherry-finished whisky. I get notes of malt and lots of fruit character, with apricots, dried figs and golden raisins mingling with salted caramel, brown sugar, charred cinnamon stick, and oak with a faint hint of cardamom. Finish is long and warm with banana caramelized in brown sugar, baking spices and charred oak, with hints of smoke and black pepper. This is just about perfect.90.0 USD per BottleBack Bay Wine Spirits and Craft Beer

Deep amber color. Nose is rich with buttery caramel, burnt sage, allspice, vanilla bean, pipe tobacco and powdered sugar. Heavy, velvety mouthfeel. The palate is a balance of sweet and spice with notes of bubbling caramel, charred cinnamon stick, allspice, nutmeg, sage, buttery toffee, with a faint hint of anise and a touch of oak. Finish is medium-long, dry and warming, with more oak and baking spices. I wish the finish was a little longer, but otherwise superb.90.0 USD per BottleMarty's Fine Wines
