Glenmorangie The Cadboll Estate 15 Year (Batch #1)
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed February 26, 2022Clean, classic “scotchy” nose. Werther’s candy, yeasty bread dough, some faint white orchard fruit, banana pudding, mild barrel spices, maybe a pinch of nutmeg, and appearing late white chocolate. It’s sharper on the tongue than anticipated, given the sweet and gentle nose. The palate starts out with a bit of honey dipped golden delicious apple, then it quickly heats up with cinnamon and a pinch of cayenne pepper. Moderately spaced legs develop nicely then quickly disappear. Coats the mouth well and has a slightly oily slickness to it that’s pleasant. Finishes semidry, leaving mostly oak and a hint of cocoa in its wake. Adding water wakes the nose up a bit making it more akin to the flavor, which is softened by it as well, ultimately bridging the gap. It’s an enjoyable dram either way. Sweet heat on the nose. There are notes of fresh herbaceous spices like coriander seed, rye, spearmint, and a pinch of dill. I also get tobacco flower and candied tangerine citrus. There’s also a hint of white pepper and charred green wood, all beneath a pretty hefty cloud of alcohol vapor (which is no surprise it being barrel proof). Stay with it for a while and the sweetness becomes recognizable as vanilla frosting, and the addition of ice brings out baking staples such as cinnamon, cloves, and cocoa. Hot and spicy on the tongue, but not in a bad way. There’s cayenne, dried chilis, smoked paprika, sweet dill, moist rye bread, ginger, caramel corn, and a bit of grapefruit pith. Nice tight uniform legs though relatively quick. The body feels good in the mouth, not too heavy, not too thin. Finishes mildly, and dry but not too dry despite the high ABV. Muted spices, some vanilla wafers, and popsicle stick hang on for a while. This makes a great treat over an ice ball.

Nice rum. Not quite the Perfección but pretty good. It has a a pleasant nose with tropical fruit notes of coconut and papaya under a blanket of caramel, cocoa, and wood. Delicious flavor though a bit sweet, definitely some sugar has been added back into the distillate. Slightly hot, but not harsh. Flavors are reminiscent of bourbon, vanilla and spice, but with a tropical twist. The texture is OK and it holds up pretty well to ice despite the low ABV. Finishes semidry, a little woody, and sweet like cane juice. Sip this one neat, or better yet over an ice ball. You won’t be disappointed.

The nose on this dram is quite typical of the style and easily identifiable as a Macallan, with their signature sherry cask scent. I get tawny grape skins, stale almonds, wood spice akin to powdered ginger, a mix of dried apricot and prune, an undercurrent of clean sweet barley malt, and the faintest hint of woodsmoke. On the palate it’s less sweet than expected, with an initial burn of alcohol. As it mellows, it becomes sweeter with a floral note, almost like rose syrup. Fruity notes appear reminiscent of pluot and Asian pear. There’s definitely some spiciness, pink pepper, ginger and a pinch of nutmeg. A citrus note of burnt orange peel shows up as well. The mouthfeel is good not great, but the legs develop quite slowly and take their time as they travel down the glass in a fairly even curtain. The finish is drying, with plenty of tannic nuttiness, toffee sweetness, some raisins, and mild chocolatey smoke. In the end, I’m reminded of a slightly burnt fruitcake. Take your time with this one. This one reminds me more of a bourbon than a rum. I guess 12 years in American oak will do that. ;) The nose is sweet and buttery. There are notes of sugar, spice, and everything nice. There is a strong hit of vanilla, bananas foster, a bit of caramel, also some musty wood and a touch of herbs. The taste is bittersweet with burnt sugar, rye spice, toffee, and a bit of leather. Nice body, substantial but not too syrupy. The finish is mild, starting with Demerara sugar, then fading to semidry oak and a pinch of mint.

Plantation XO 20th Anniversary Rum
Aged Rum — Barbados
Reviewed October 9, 2021 (edited March 23, 2022)Great sipping rum. Smells sweet and fruity like mixed tropical fruits boiled in sugar. The oak influence is subtle but apparent. Sweet on the tongue, but not cloying at all, there’s molasses, honey, berries, cocoa, a little bananas foster with cinnamon notes from the wood spices, and a hint of coconut developing late on the palate. Feels silky smooth in the mouth, and the medium finish is nice and warm. Had this side by side with Kaniche perfección, which is created with a very similar process, and found them to be quite similar though the Kaniche was woodier but not as dark and sweet as the Plantation. Came in a really cool card box like a fancy scotch with a tropical scene depicted on it. The bottle was also ornately decorated, so no surprise that it was a bit pricey but a nice presentation. Almost perfection ;). -
Absolutely spectacular rum! I sipped this like a single malt scotch. Needs nothing, no ice or even water, too good to mix. Smells great, sweet with a hint of maple and charred oak barrel, and juicy ripe berries. Delicate palate that’s lightly sweet and slightly spicy, with some fruitiness from the cognac influence. Velvety texture in the mouth, and it has a nice medium finish of gentle wood and molasses. It was a fair price and came in a cool red wooden box. Would make a great gift for the rum lover in your life.
