An unobtrusive rum with little really write home about. An ideal option for those looking for a sipping rum whom may not have much of a repertoire behind them. Slightly on the sweeter side makes this more accessible than some of the more “traditional” expressions which can feel too abrupt and overpowering. Would buy again to have “on-hand”. Palate is well rounded and contained in a sweet-edged package.

Ron Matusalem Gran Reserva 15
Aged Rum — Dominican Republic
Reviewed May 11, 2021 (edited December 13, 2021)Wow - I didn’t expect that. A similar profile to Diplomatico with a shorter finish and slightly less rounded palate this is a superb rum for the money. A very traditional rum with a softer more refined delivery due to the sweetness - though I wouldn’t call it “sweet”. -
A real left field rum, playing by none of the traditional rules. With a sweetness which would challenge a bag of sugar for the prize, this is an exceptionally quaffable rum - almost dangerously so. Definitely one for the summer sat in the garden and ideally with supervision of others... Strong fruit profiles and toffee, great long finish thanks to the sugar content - the alcohol didn’t stand a chance.

An excellent expression from the masters at Plantation. Full of the flavours which classically define the plantation range, bringing the tropical moral and tones such as banana and pineapple with the richness of candied fruits and butterscotch. For the money...I think there are better alternatives, but this is without question a fine rum.

Ron Diplomático Reserva Exclusiva Rum
Aged Rum — Venezuela
Reviewed May 11, 2021 (edited May 20, 2021)My go-to rum, every day of the week. Whilst some find the molasses content far too high, I find the rich, deep and versatile profile make this a rum you can turn to on any occasion - whether it’s sat pool side on ice or huddled inside neat by the fire. The only thing I’ve found better is the more aged and refined expressions such as the Ambassador. -
Merser & Co. Double Barrel Rum
Gold Rum — London, England
Reviewed May 11, 2021 (edited June 27, 2022)Everything you would expect from a pale/young rum. Very clean but lacking depth. The alcohol is the main player here with the short finish being overwhelmed by the evaporation with little supporting flavour. Beautiful bottle though - probably not one I’ll buy again in a hurry for the money...
