Garrison Brothers Balmorhea Texas Straight Bourbon
Bourbon — Texas, USA
Reviewed April 6, 2020 (edited August 7, 2022)Nose: Fruits, cigars, new leather, wet roads, sour green apple, fresh mint, and creosote. Taste: Tart fruit, oak, cocoa, ending with a empty cigar humidifier. Experience: Feels like walking into your ex coyboy granddad's study. He still wears boots, leather vest, and bolo tie. He chews more than smokes the occasional cigar and while he doesn't ride anymore he taught you how to crack a whip while your mom wasn't looking. Notes: Big, bold, hot Texas. This is a Texas bourbon through and through. It's darker than anything I've seen, the flavors are bold and and impossible to ignore, and it is thick and hot. -
Mellow Corn Bottled in Bond Whiskey
Corn — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed March 16, 2020 (edited September 16, 2020)Nose: Mellooooow kettle corn, some cinnamon, a hint of caramel, hay. Taste: cornbread, card candy caramels. Experience: This is one of the most appropriately named whiskeys I've ever tasted. It's is subtle to the core but not offensive in any way, very enjoyable of hard to get deep into. Note: some people try not to factor price into the review, I always try and at least mention it. For the price this whiskey beats out so many other options. -
Glenfiddich 15 Year Solera Reserve
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland
Reviewed February 8, 2020 (edited April 29, 2020)Nose: A fruit bomb, citrus, red fruits, apple, even melon, honey, lightly toasted bread, Taste: Sweet and juicy. With warm cider, honey, with a slightly breaded finish. Experience: Early summer, the sun is warm but not hot and everything is ripe and juicy, taking a big bite of your favorite fruit it drips off the sides of your mouth, you don't care though because ti tastes so good. -
1792 Full Proof Straight Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed February 2, 2020 (edited February 3, 2020)Nose: Apple, orange rinds, powdered sugar, hay, wet dirt. Taste: Apple, juicy fruit, hot pie filling, cinnamon, dark chocolate, leather. Experience: Eating the fresh baked fruits in pie, tarts, or another treat. It's too hot to eat all of but your mouth starts to water and you bite in anyway, it is too hot but still worth it. It's a juicy bourbon for sure, proof hounds won't be disappointed. It does have a lot to offer, but in my opinion it falls short of some other cask strength options. But that is more praise for those than a knock against 1792, place it between Elijah Craig barrel proof and Bullet barrel proof. If that makes sense. -
Maker's Mark Wood Finishing Series 2019 RC6
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed February 2, 2020 (edited March 22, 2020)Nose: Caramelized banana, brown sugar, buttered toast, berry, shortcake. Taste: Caramel, spices, nutmeg, peanuts, the burnt sugars show up towards the end. Experience: I would say it's like making sundays or bananas foster, but that would lead you to think it is a sweet whiskey, and it isn't that sweet, especially on the palate. I like it but find myself still wishing for 46 cask strength to become regularly available.
