Tastes

I got to try this one by buying it for a friend. He got me some Makers Mark so it was a fair trade. It's been awhile since I had any bourbon and this one exemplified the good stuff I was missing, from the vanilla-oak nose to the buttery burn of the finish. A little water opened it right up. Ever notice how fantastic an empty bourbon glass smells? Almost as good as drinking it

I pick up the apple chips in the nose, appropriate maybe to its apple juice color. Neat, I taste corn tapering to anise before a long tail of alcohol burn. Adding a bit of water or maybe because it's been in the glass longer there is corn on the nose and a sweet oily mouth feel. Like its color, the overall experience is one of lightness. A true maverick, there is no suggestion of bourbon or scotch. A nice whiskey to drink and savor.

Nose is slightly peaty unappealing lacquer thinner. Palate is a little better with an initial soap flavor that fades out leaving a peppery alcohol finish. Water helps the taste but it is extremely hard to get past the odor. Maybe drinking it through a straw.....

Very nice drunk neat and slow. Full mouth feel, slight sweetness, pleasant alcohol burn on the finish.

Not a fair comparison as I tried on the heels of a Tamdhu scotch but I picked up an almost medicinal aspect in both the nose and the taste. The barrel char and vanilla notes were the obvious bourbon contributions after having the scotch. Peppery on the back end.

Very nice drinkable rye. Not as spicy as my favorite Rittenhouse but has a better buttery follow through. But as ryes go, there are better and cheaper.
