Macallan 12 Year Sherry Oak Cask
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed May 14, 2016 (edited August 3, 2017)My first experience with this whisky last night sitting around the backyard fire pit with friends. Sweet-tart fruity nose. Neat on the tongue it was crisp and encouraging. With a bit of water it opened up with sherry overtones and a hint of peat as it finished. Very enjoyable -
I experienced a great tasting of this rum and its siblings at the distillery on Kaua'i. The very enthusiastic staff (what a great job-working at a distillery in Hawai'i!) guided us through the tasting and the preparation of our own favorite rum drink. The MaiTai I made with this dark rum was fantastic.

Maker's Mark American Pharoah
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed May 7, 2016 (edited September 12, 2017)Same whiskey, different bottle?? -
Typically a vodka and gin drinker, this was the first small batch bourbon I ever tried. It was at a bourbon tasting while at a conference in Lexington KY. I was impressed enough to buy a bottle and used it get past the "wall" as described in Lew Bryson's book Tasting Whiskey (well it took a bit more than that single bottle). Now I'm happily exploring ryes, scotches, and especially maverick whiskeys. But WR will always hold a place in my heart as "my first".
