Baltimore Epoch Straight Rye Batch #2
Rye — Maryland, USA
Reviewed November 2, 2018 (edited February 19, 2020)As a Baltimorean with a love of high proof firewater, my opinion may be taken with a grain of salt - but I think Epoch is a bit underrated per Distiller’s expert review. This is a chewy, warm, Xmas spicy, ORANGE PEEL sip that is one of the very few ryes I’ve ever been tempted to order a second pour on (serious bourbon drinker here, rye usually does nothing for me.) Complexity and depth are already present, but could go to another level. Based on my experience with Epoch, I am absolutely psyched to see what may come out of BWC’s aged reserves in future. Another year or two in the barrels may reveal something truly exceptional. -
Rieger's Kansas City Whiskey
Other Whiskey — Indiana (bottled in Missouri), USA
Reviewed October 7, 2018This is a fantastically interesting tasting experience. For me, matches up rather precisely with the expert review - it's absolutely astonishing that when you roll it around your mouth, the middle of your tongue reads it as water. But the front of the palate picks up the pleasant baking spices and fruit, so that's all right. The short finish encourages that next taste and it always feels fresh. Overall quite enjoyable. -
High West Campfire (Discontinued)
Blended American Whiskey — (bottled in Utah), Multiple Countries
Reviewed September 8, 2018The rare whiskey that does EXACTLY what it says on the bottle: a truly marvelous technical feat as far as that goes. Campfire smoke and toasted marshmallows. -
This is lovely, as all Wellers tend to be - mellow, sweet, almost coquettish with the short finish but mature in choice of perfume. LOVE the way this smells. Reminds one what Bourbon should be. Only detraction is a personal one: I want the proof jacked up by about 10. But I like my firewater to whip me on the way out.

Bower Hill Single Barrel Kentucky Straight Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed July 24, 2018 (edited March 6, 2021)A little young, a little raw; it has a couple fangs poking out in the scent and the taste. But still, the beginnings of a dignified end are present here - happy to drink it above a few others at the moment. I'd throw it back in the barrel a couple years and salivate awaiting what might emerge when it wears down those few teeth. -
Sit back and prepare to be knuckledusted in the mouth by the malt in this fiery young spirit. Heady, bready grain notes compete with milk chocolate and his coach coffee in a knock down, drag out outdoor brawl that leaves you shouting with excitement even as you don't know who to root for. Given some further aging to take the raw edge off I can't wait to see how these fighters come out swinging later in their careers. In the mean time this is one of the most interesting matchups I've seen in ages.
