Frank August Small Batch Kentucky Straight Bourbon
Bourbon — Kentucky, USA
Reviewed January 10, 2026Just taking a whiff, you get inviting vanilla right away with hints of caramel and warm sweetness that make you want to dive straight in. On the palate, Frank August Small Batch Bourbon stays smooth and balanced, layering vanilla, toasted sugar, light oak, and subtle baking spice. There’s a refined softness to it that keeps everything in check without feeling thin or boring. The finish is clean and lingering, with gentle spice and oak fading out slowly. It’s an easy drinker that still feels intentional and well crafted. This was one of my favorite go to bottles long before the awards and the price jump, and it earned that spot through consistency and balance, not hype. -
Old Ezra 7-Year Barrel Strength is a bold, high proof bourbon that leans classic and unapologetic. Vanilla and caramel lead the palate, followed by heavy oak, baking spice, and a hint of dark fruit. The proof is noticeable, delivering a warm, assertive finish that lingers with oak and spice. It’s not overly polished or sneaky smooth, but it’s well balanced and delivers exactly what you expect from a barrel strength bourbon. A solid pour for anyone who enjoys traditional flavors, strong character, and a no frills approach.65.0 USD per Bottle

Deceptively smooth, high proof bourbon that deserves a little respect. Vanilla and caramel come through immediately, but it leans darker than Wikd Turkey Rare Breed, more toasted sugar, cocoa, and charred oak, with subtle dried fruit and spice underneath. The mouthfeel is rich and silky, and it drinks far below its proof, which is exactly what makes it dangerous. Easy sips can turn into a long night if you’re not careful. Bold, balanced, and incredibly approachable for the proof, 1920 is one of those bottles that feels refined but still packs a punch. A staple for anyone who enjoys high proof bourbon without the burn.

Rare Breed is one of my go to bourbons and an easy favorite. Big vanilla and caramel up front, followed by warm baking spices, oak, and just enough barrel proof heat to keep it interesting without being harsh. The finish is long, smooth, and well balanced. What really sets it apart is value. For the proof, depth, and consistency, it drinks well above its price point. Great neat, solid with a splash of water, and always reliable. If you like bold, vanilla forward bourbons without paying premium prices, this one belongs on your shelf.
