Kings County Bourbon (Discontinued)
Bourbon — New York, USA
Reviewed February 23, 2019 (edited December 7, 2019)Straight Bourbon Batch 141: LOTS of American oak on the nose (I like American oak so I consider this a good thing), with some vanilla in there as well. Palate is nondescript grain, but with a pretty strong and tasty smoke/char note at the end. I don’t get the “youth” that others on here seem to, but I definitely agree with the one dimensional-ness. Overall, the flavor doesn’t quite deliver on what the nose seems to promise, but wow am I excited about what will come from this place. -
Slaughter House American Whiskey
Other Whiskey — (Bottled in California), USA
Reviewed February 23, 2019 (edited May 16, 2020)Nose is reminiscent of a very clean corn whiskey; doesn’t seem to have a lot going on. Palate is quite dry and almost earthy, like a well-made rye. The sips after the first reveal a very cool deep baked goods quality, like a dark breakfast muffin with a hint of molasses, with some butterscotch in there as well. There is a strange, subtle dark-berry-without-the-sweetness note at the end that I assume is the wine barrel influence. Overall, a pretty interesting whiskey that seems to be priced well (~43 USD where I am), but it seems more like a fortuitous end to an experiment than a purposeful flavor profile.43.0 USD per Bottle -
George Dickel Barrel Select
Tennessee Whiskey — Tennessee, USA
Reviewed February 16, 2019 (edited December 25, 2019)Oh goodness. What a work of art. Nose is seasoned and split white oak, you might as well be in an Ozark lumber yard. Palate has the signature Dickel sweet lemon-vanilla custard, but it’s a member of a band of virtuosos instead of the star of the show (like in #12). It’s honestly a crime that this is so cheap (~$35), but I’ll never tell. -
Aberfeldy 12 Year
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed February 16, 2019 (edited February 23, 2019)Nose has a very clean alcoholic, almost sanitized feel to it (think chlorine-in-a-swimming-pool type of vibe...). Some fresh hardwood is there too, but not much else. Palate is pretty stingy, with lots of alcohol and hardly much else. I really want to like this, but unfortunately I don’t. Definitely won’t buy again. Did I just get a bad bottle? EDIT: had another taste later on in an evening, and enjoyed it very much. Lots of Scotch-leather on the nose, and a really interesting dry rye-like palate with some toffee at the end. Glad I gave it another try! -
The app's tasting notes are actually pretty spot on for this one, especially after letting it air for a bit. Roasted grains definitely dominate that palate at first, but not in an offensive way. Finish gets a bit disjointed in my opinion, with a lot of small flavors fighting for attention. Honestly, the aroma after sitting for a while is significantly better than the actual flavor.
